Passkeysmight be the future of online authentications. Many security breaches and incidents are related to passwords, so if there was a reliable way to get rid of them, online security could get a lot easier, and password managers have been slowly but surely adding support for passkeys. 1Password is one of them, and now, the password manager is finally rolling out mobile support for passkeys.
1Password has announced that its formally rolling out the ability to save and use passkeys directly from their mobile apps and browser extensions. This means that from now onward, you will be able to use passkeys for a growing number of websites and applications. This feature is available across various platforms, including iOS 17, Android 14, and all major web browsers on Mac, Windows, and Linux. Passkeyswere available for somethrough the browser extension, but now, they’re rolling out to mobile users as well. you may organize passkey credentials, receive proactive passkey notifications through 1Password’s Watchtower feature, securely share passkeys with others, and customize business passkey policies for organizational use.
The hold-up was because Android 14 was the first Android version to formally introduce support for passkeys, so evidently, 1Password needed to wait until this upcoming operating system was close to release. Sometime soon, 1Password will provide an end-to-end passkey experience across all platforms, enabling users to also unlock their 1Password accounts with a passkey, making things secure from front to back.
Passkeys are being embraced by everyone from Google to TikTok, and GitHub. The technology is on the right track to become a true replacement for passwords, and it’s great to see options like 1Password make passkeys more accessible and easier to manage across devices. The passkey support will work across all the 1Password mobile apps and browser extensions, and eventually, 1Password itself will be accessible through passkeys — there’s no firm timeline on when that might roll out, though.
To try out Passkeys, you’ll need the newest Android 14 or iOS 17 (as of the time of writing, iOS 17 is out, while Android 14 isn’t). Make sure that your 1Password app is fully updated.
