Danny DeVito has appeared in films and TV shows for nearly six decades, and while young audiences primarily recognize him from theIt’s Always Sunnycast, he has over 150 acting credits.
It’s Always Sunnyseason 17opens with the second part of itsAbbott Elementarycrossover, but the second episode is back to business as usual. Theepisode sees the Gang reacting to Frank’s potential deathwhen the eldest member finds himself in a coma. Despite the dark premise, there’s plenty of humor as always.

Alex Wolff is an American actor who can be recognized for his roles in films likeHereditary,Oppenheimer, andPig, all of which were widely acclaimed. He made a cameo in It’s Always Sunny season 17, episode 2 asSimon, the “businessman” who supports the Gang’s ideas to franchise Paddy’s Pub, convincing them he’ll invest.
Funnily enough,Wolff previously co-starred with Danny DeVito inJumanji: The Next Level, where he played DeVito’s grandson. Wolff plays college student Spencer Gilpin while DeVito plays Eddie Gilpin, a man who previously owned a diner with Danny Glover’s character. Both are relatively minor roles, but they’re fun parts of the movie.

Simon ends up passing out in a crack house and is left there, but it was his actions that got him there.

Will Simon Return In It’s Always Sunny Season 17?
While it would have been fun to see these two actors share a scene together, Wolff’s character didn’t actually have any scenes with DeVito. As per the title (“Frank Is in a Coma”),Frank was, in fact, in a coma for the majority of its runtime, while Dennis, Charlie, and Mac were the ones who ran off on an adventure.
Given Frank’s history with various facets of the industry, including running sweatshops and dealing with terrorist organizations, having him interact with a young gun like Simon would have been hilarious, especially if they disagreed on franchising Paddy’s. Frank is ultimately the character who gets the last laugh in the episode, but he misses most of the action.
There are still six episodes to go inIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiaseason 17, so with Simon being left behind, there’s plenty of time for a potential return. It’s rare that cameo characters from famous actors return, but anything is possible in the FX sitcom.
