The actor was confirmed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson/Captain America following his first solo outing duringMarvel’s five-and-a-halfAvengers: Doomsdaycast announcement. During the same video, it was confirmed that several actors from the 200sX-Menfranchise would also return.
Posting to hisInstagramstory,Mackie shared a snap of himselfon a flight to London captioned: “Andso it begins…” The actor was clad in aPowerpuff Girlsshirt with classic villains like Mojo Jojo and HIM on it. While not giving any explicit details about the movie itself, he did put a blood-splattered filter over the selfie, potentially hinting at its action-packed tone. Curiously, this implies that Mackie is only just starting to film his part inAvengers: Doomsday.

Captain America Is Just Beginning To Film His Scenes
Previously, stars such asJames Marsden, Benedict Wong, and Ian McKellen were spotted on set, andAlan Cumming stated he was heading to filmearlier this month. As a result, it’s a fair assessment that the Avengers and X-Men scenes may be filmed separately, at least to start. This tracks with the idea that the latter team will appear initially in their own separate universe, but no details are confirmed at this time. Notably,Mackie confirmed his interest in teaming up with several X-Men:
Look, I am a big Cyclops fan. That’s my favorite X-Men. I have a Cyclops action figure on my key chain that I’ve had since high school. When I was in high school, the X-Men cartoon was really big, and this was before the movies. I’ve always been a huge Cyclops fan, and I’m really, really excited - hopefully, knock on wood - for them to be a part of it and come into it. Despite the differences in their filming schedules,Avengers: Doomsdaycould put Mackie’s Captain America opposite Cumming’s Nightcrawler and Marsden’s Cyclops.Mackie arriving later to set than the others does not mean they don’t share any scenes.

According to the end ofCaptain America: Brave New World, Sam will take a leadership role in reforming the Avengers, setting him up to have a substantial role inAvengers: Doomsday.Since he is assembling the team of heroes, antiheroes, and villains who will face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, he is poised to meet all kinds of multiversal characters.
Unfortunately, despite Mackie’sPowerpuff Girlsattire, it’s significantly less likely Cap will be teaming up with Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup inAvengers: Doomsday. Humor aside, Mackie confirming that he’s arriving on set only further fuels the excitement and speculation as to what comes next for Sam.
