The Dtoid community art project
[Every month or so we post a new art assignment for the Dtoid community. Fun! Here’s a recap of the latest. You have until Thursday, January 31st to finish your next project, which is detailed at the end of the post!]
Eight brave Dtoiders exposed their sexy faces to the world for our latest Artists Wanted topic,SELF PORTRAIT, and they all looked amazing! FromMega MantoJet Set RadiotoDynasty WarriorstoAlan Wake, everyone’s portrait was unique and the stories behind them were all incredibly fun to read!

Hit the jump to bask in their glory!
First up isAnaugi, who gave us two fantastic creations! The first was “Round 1 Fight”, which you see above. Here’s what he had to say about the piece:
I figured I wanted to do a Capcom fighting game sprite because I could get a lot of detail in, while still having it be a somewhat retro sprite. The character and face are from scratch, while I found the fonts in places.

And here’s a bit about the second, titled “Megaman Powers”:
I love the Inti handheldMega Mangames, so I decided to put myself in there as a protagonist receiving “Megaman Powers” from Model X. This one is more editing rather than from scratch. I still put quite a bit of work into making sure the bust looked like me and keeping it the same style of theMega Man Zero/ZXgames. I decided to unbeard myself because I feel like I would look more Mega Man-ish that way.
Awesome x2! Thanks, Anaugi!

Next up isKeithTheGeekwith his piece, “I Want to Battle!”. Here’s a bit about his art:
If you read my blog before, you can probably tell I likePokémon. If not, well, I likePokémon. A lot. I decided to draw myself in the style of one of my favorite artists,Ken Sugimori, who does the majority of the concept art for thePokémonseries. I’m not that good of an artist, but I did my best to do his style!

Looks great to me! Thanks, KeithTheGeek!
Our next artist isanglorum, with his piece titled “Jet Set Radio Pooture”. Here’s what he had to say about it:
It’s based off of my favorite game of all time,Jet Set Radio Future! I used to create drawings like this in the margins of my history notes during high school all the time. Eventually I learned about 3D modeling and moved away from that sort of thing, but occasionally I get an excuse to let the doodle beast out to roam, so thanks for that!

No no, thank YOU, anglorum!
Up next ismyherozerowith his piece, “Get Weapon”. Here’s what he had to say about his art:
When I was younger, I used to edit sprites for fun. Grab some game sprites, edit them together, recolor, and make other changes as needed. I always enjoyed it. I still find it very relaxing to edit pixel by pixel (though, this marks only the second time I have edited sprites in probably the last decade).

So, when I saw that the Artists Wanted was to do a self portrait in any game’s style, I knew I had to pickMega Man. Not only am I a huge fan ofMega Man, but I also used a lot of theMega Mansprites as a base when making my custom sprites. So this is not only a shout-out of my love ofMega Man, but to my own past.
Fantastic story and art! Thanks, myherozero!

Next we haveRoberto Plankton, who gave us three awesome pieces! First up is “Me Moia” (above), followed by “The Hive”:
And finally, “It’s Gonna Work Because I’m Pushin’ it Right”:

Check out his blogto find out more about each piece! Beautiful work as always, Roberto Plankton!
Our next artist is our ownKyle MacGregorwith his portrait titled “Hyakuretsu Kyaku”. Here’s a snippet about his work:

So there I was playingPuzzle Fighterlast night. I was enjoying the nice chibi-style Capcom art and then I remembered we have these new Monthly Musing things going on. Struck with inspiration I grabbed a pencil and sketched this up pretty quickly.
If you can manage to dothispretty quickly, I can only imagine what you can do when you take your time! Thanks, Kyle! (Be sure tocheck out his blogfor more info, as well as a few bonus pics.)

Next up isrubenfwith the piece you see above, in which he becomes Alan Wake and fights Mr. Scratch! Here’s a bit about his work:
I loveAlan Wakeand painted this image using watercolors. It’s a cool metaphor for man’s duality and the struggle between the “better demons” of man’s nature.

Cool stuff! Thanks, rubenf!
Finally, we have the illustriousBeatBeat, who shared the glorious piece you see above and took the opportunity to introduce himself properly to the community. Welcome aboard, and thanks for all the great art!
And that’s it for this edition! Thanks to everyone who contributed!

For your next assignment, I want you to create something inspired byWINTER. Videogames take advantage of the cold and dark of winter in many different ways; some have you slip-sliding around whimsically in a penguin suit, while others force you to fight the limited visibility and jump scares brought on by blistering blizzard conditions. Doyouhave a favorite videogame “winter” moment? Draw it!
To see your art appear on the front page, simplywrite a community blogand title itWINTER: [Your Blog’s Title]. In the blog, post your art and a bit about the process that went into making it; then we’ll gather them all up and put them on the front page!
Have fun! Can’t wait to see what you all come up with this time around!
