I’m having a blast with theBattlefield 6open beta, and am eagerly looking forward to the second weekend, but I find it baffling that there isn’t a compass on the HUD by default. Generally speaking,Battlefieldhas forever prided itself on its scale. Even maps that don’t feature numerous vehicles per team are much larger than your average FPS map, battle royales excluded. But it’s hard to communicate when a key piece of information is obfuscated inBattlefield 6.

As shooters continue to grow more sophisticated, and their rules complex, the compass has become a mainstay. The rise of high-stakes battle royales and extraction shooters has made a compass almost necessary – you need to be able to let your team know exactly where the danger is, often down to exact directional degrees.Battlefieldgames of the past understood this, often integrating a compass into the mini-map, butBF6’s weirdest choice is hiding it deep in the settings menu.

Battlefield 6 Has A Compass, But It’s Turned Off By Default

I Thought It Was Missing Completely At First

WhenI first playedBattlefield 6at a press event, I was busy tinkering with all the classes and gameplay systems. Then, when the open beta first started, I solo-queued for my first handful of Conquest matches. It wasn’t until I finally joined a squad with some friends that I realizedmy HUD didn’t even contain a compass, makingBF6a real anomaly among modern FPS games.

“I wish I had a compass,” I told a friend. “Yeah, that really annoyed me too,” they replied.

It took me even longer to realizeBattlefield 6does have a compass, butfor some inexplicable reason, it’s turned off by default. Unless you may orient yourself at any given point onall the maps– a tall order after a single weekend with the three in the beta – there isn’t an easy way to quickly relay relative enemy positions to your squad. I probably don’t need to tell you that, “There’s a tank over there,” isn’t very helpful.

How To Turn On The Compass In Battlefield 6

It’s Buried In The Settings Menu

Even funnier, the compass setting doesn’t hold a prominent place in the settings menu; you’ll have to do some digging. Here are the steps to finding it:

You’ll want toswitch the Show Compass Multiplayer setting to On. The compass will then appear at the very top of your screen. It’s immensely helpful for coordinating with a squad, letting you provide more accurate information. It’s an odd choice to have the compass off by default, especially since there isn’t a hardcore mode in the beta. At leastBattlefield 6has a compass, though, even if it takes a little searching through the settings menu to find.
