Charlie Hunnam is set to star inMonsterseason 3 on Netflix, but before he steps into the role of an infamous serial killer, there’s another show coming to streaming with notable similarities. Hunnam is set to play Ed Gein, one of history’s most notorious murderers, for season 3’sThe Original Monster.
Netflix’s award-winning series previously focused on Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, andLyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers convicted of killing their parents. Despite the notable accolades for Netflix’sMonsteranthology, the series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan has been divisive for its controversial approach to glorifying “monsters.”

Monsterseason 3’s storyis taking viewers back to the ’50s to focus on Gein’s reign of terror in Plainfield, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin native was eventually convicted of killing two women, but he was suspected of murdering at least nine others, giving him the serial killer label. The handyman also exhumed gravesites to mutilate corpses.
Before Charlie Hunnam’s Ed Gein Show Debuts, Peacock Is Releasing A Show On Another Serial Killer
Peacock’s Upcoming Show Will Focus On The Notorious “Killer Clown”
BeforeMonsterseason 3 arrives on Netflix, those interested in true crime shows depicting the lives of serial killers will have another title to watch. Just in time for the Halloween season,Peacock is releasingDevil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, an eight-episode series focused on another notorious serial killer.
While Gacy’s time as the “Killer Clown” will be on display,Devil in Disguisewill shift focus to the victims and their families while analyzing how Gacy managed to carry out his crime spree for so long. He was eventually caught in 1978, but by then, he had killed over 30 young men. Here’s the official synopsis forDevil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy:

From 1972-1978, thirty-three young men were kidnapped, murdered and buried in a crawl space beneath their killer’s house. And no one was the wiser. Not for all those years. Why? He was charming and funny. Had a good, All-American job. Was a community leader. He even volunteered to entertain sick kids…while dressed as a clown.DEVIL IN DISGUISE: JOHN WAYNE GACYpeels back the twisted layers of Gacy’s life while weaving in heartrending stories of his victims; exploring the grief, guilt, and trauma of their families and friends; and exposing the systemic failures, missed opportunities and societal prejudices that fueled his reign of terror.
How Devil In Disguise Compares To Netflix’s Monster Anthology
The True Crime Subgenre Remains Popular On Streaming
Like Netflix’sMonsteranthology series,Devil in Disguisewill present a comprehensive look into the life of a notable killer. This means incorporating other aspects outside the brutal crimes, such as the Peacock show’s focus on the “systematic failures” that allowed Gacy to remain free for so long.
The Original Monster, on the other hand, will delve into Gein being one of the first celebrities of the serial killer nature, jumpstarting the obsession with true crime in pop culture. Seeing as there will be a show on Gein nearly 70 years after his conviction, with true crime as popular as ever, it seems the celebrity notion remains true.
Monsterseason 4 is reportedly in developmentand set to focus on the Lizzie Borden case.
Speaking of celebrities,Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacywill continue the trend of using notable names to portray real-life figures.Severance’s Michael Chernus will portray Gacy, with other characters played by Gabriel Luna, Michael Angarano,Chris Sullivan, andMarin Ireland. As forMonsterseason 3, Charlie Hunnam will be joined by Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Addison Rae in key roles.
