With the two continuing to have strong dynamics with the network,Alien: Earth’s Noah Hawley andIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob Mac are reportedly teaming for an adaptation ofFar Cry. First created by Crytek and since helmed by Ubisoft, the action game franchise puts players in the shoes of different characters fighting for survival in various locales.

Since first teaming with the network for his reimagining ofFargo, Hawley has made a home for himself at FX with a lengthy first-look production deal. In addition to the anthology crime series, the Emmy winner was also behind the acclaimed Marvel seriesLegionandthe newly releasedAlien: Earthon the network.

Mac, having recently changed his name from McElhenney, similarly first broke out on FX with the acclaimed sitcomIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which he co-created and co-stars in with his partners Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton. His profile has since expanded to include co-creating and starring in Apple TV+‘sMythic QuestandFX’sWelcome to Wrexhamwith Ryan Reynolds.

As reported byComicBook.com, a since-deleted post from Ubisoft’s official website announced that aFar Cryseries is in the works at FX with Hawley and Mac attached as co-creators. The post also reported that Mac would lead the action video game adaptation while Hawley will serve as showrunner, and that subsequent seasons of the show would be set in new locations with new characters that won’t “shy away from the darkest and most absurd parts of humanity”, as written by Ubisoft Film & Television’s head of film and television content, Margaret Boykin, in the post.

ScreenRantreached out to FX and Ubisoft about the deleted post, though have not received a response as of the time of writing.

What The Deleted Post Means For The Far Cry Franchise

Interestingly, if the show does move forward, it would mark Mac and Hawley’s first reunion since his guest appearance inFargoseason 3 as an LAPD officer Carrie Coon’s Gloria interacts with while investigating her stepfather’s mysterious past. It would also mark his latest major creative venture outside ofIt’s Always SunnyfollowingMythic Quest’s cancellation.

As for Hawley, it would, in some ways, fit right into his wheelhouse, with theFar Crygames’ anthology structure, which he’s received consistent acclaim for acrossFargo’s five released seasons. However, with it also being source material more action-driven than Hawley’s norm, it could also prove a different creative venture for him.

Considering the post was deleted by Ubisoft, there could be a variety of reasons why the studio took back the announcement. The most likely is that they simply just weren’t ready, either still waiting to finalize the deals with Mac and Hawley, or saving the reveal for closer to a more substantial update onFar Cry 7’s rumored development.

Our Take On The Far Cry Show Development Reports

Ever sinceThe Last of Us' breakout success, it’s clear everyone is looking for their own big video game series to compete in the genre, and aFar Cryseries from Mac and Hawley is one that carries a lot of promise to do so for FX. Between the latter’s prior success adaptingLegionandAlien: Earthfor TVand the games' anthology structure, there’s a lot that can be done with the material.

Additionally, I think the duo making aFar Cryshow would go a long way to redeeming the franchise live-action history after theUwe Boll’s terrible movie adaptationand the subsequent movie that never materialized. However, with no word yet from either studio, only time will tell if the group’s reported plans come to fruition.
