Earlier this week, Infinity Ward revealed that the nextCall of Duty: Modern Warfareupdate would require an approximately 15GB download for console players. That update,CoD: MWpatch 1.20, is available now, and while there is a mandatory 12GB download, there is also a secondary 18GB download that is required to access some of the game’s offerings. Indeed, these downloads are further inflatingCall of Duty: Modern Warfare’s already substantial file size, leaving some fans quite irritated.
To provide some perspective, after today’s downloads,Call of Duty: Modern Warfaretakes up nearly 200GB of space on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On PC, where the aforementioned downloads were consolidated into a single 32GB update,CoD: MW’s file sizeis very slightly less, but it is still reaching a point that some players are finding problematic.

With respect to whyCall of Duty: Modern Warfareis so big, that has not been fully addressed by Infinity Ward. While the developer did comment on the largesize of theCoD: MWSeason 2 update, indicating that a big download was necessary in order to “reduce the overall file size of the game,” that has not stopped the title from reaching the significant storage requirements that players are now coming up against.
Of course,Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis not the only game to have a trulymassive file size, and there are a myriad of titles that require 100GBs of space or more. That said, it may not be long beforeCoD: MWhits the 250GB mark, which would mean that this single game takes up half of the space on an original PS4’s harddrive. While certainly players can opt to simply uninstallModern Warfareif they must, this is clearly a less than ideal situation for fans with limited storage space.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
