FPS fans have been waiting for months to get their hands onCall of Duty: WW2, to see whether developer Sledgehammer Games' claims oftaking the series back to its rootshave any merit. Console owners have already been given access to the beta in recent weeks, and now PC players are being given the opportunity to do so a little ahead of schedule.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the studio confirmed that the open beta forCall of Duty: WW2would get underway for the PC crowd on September 29. However, the preview went live on Steam earlier today, meaning that players can join the fray a day earlier than expected.
Unlike the private beta that was available to console players who had pre-ordered the game, anyone that’s interested in sampling the latestCall of Dutytitle is invited to take part in the PC test. There are multiple factors behind this decision, ranging from Sledgehammer’s desire to “stress test” the experience, to its function as an attempt to woo PC gamers ahead of the game’s release.
Call of Dutyis undoubtedly one of the biggest FPS franchises around, but its primary audience is on consoles. This year, we’ve already seenDestiny 2take one major Activision franchise to the PC, so it’s clear that the publisher has a desire to appeal to a wider swathe of players.
The open beta is set to give testers access to four maps, four different modes, and a restricted version of the game’s progression system that allows players to grind up to a maximum of level 35. One of the most exciting aspects of the preview is the fact that it offers a chance togo hands-on with War mode, a new addition that adds some narrative elements to the multiplayer experience.
PC players can jump into the open beta forCall of Duty: WW2right now via Steam. The preview is set to run until October 2.
