There is one big time movie studio and distributor that remains unfazed by the effects of COVID-19 and that is none other thanNetflix. The streaming giant’s release schedule has not been harshly affected by the pandemic and a lot of their content might be gunning for Oscar glory with the likes ofDavid Fincher’sMank, as well as Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf’sPieces of a Woman, which is out with a first trailer.

Kirby is a highly accomplished actress in theater, television and film, thanks to her workas Princess Margaret inThe Crown, or in action movies likeHobbes & ShawandMission: Impossible - Fallout, with her set to reprise her role as the White Widow inMission: Impossible 7, currently filming in Europe.

Pieces of a Womanis a much different film, directed by Kornél Mundruczó and produced by Martin Scorsese, where Kirby and LaBeouf play a young couple excited to welcome their first child into the world, only to lose it during home labor.

The trailer shows Kirby’s character dealing with the consequences of such a traumatic event, from coming to terms with everyday life, the struggles a child’s death puts into the couple’s dynamics, legal proceedings, dealing with in-laws, and everything imaginable stemming from the heartbreaking tragedy.

The movie does not look like it goes easy on the eyes or heart, but the gripping and devastating plot is the perfect showcase for Kirby’s talent, something which is already being recognized after she picked up the award for Best Actress from the Venice Film Festival back in September.

While Netflix’s Oscar ambitions in 2020’s edition were grounded after the the company’s productions only secured 2 awards out of 24 nominations, but the movie landscape drawn out by the pandemic has streaming leading the creative charge for 2021 with productions likeTrial of The Chicago 7,MankandPieces of a Woman, so things are looking bright, unlike the latter’s trailer.

Pieces of a Womanwill release in select theaters August 07, 2025 and will stream on Netflix starting Jul 11, 2025.
