Chicago PD Atwater and Val argue loudly in the street

Although thisChicago PDseason 12story is mostly focused on Cook, all of the other characters play a role in the investigation. The case becomes complicated when the CI double-crosses the police, and a chunk of the episode is dedicated to trying to get her to cooperate. Cook is not the only one who works with the CI, however. Two other characters join forces for the first time in a long time to attempt to secure the woman’s cooperation.

Chicago PD Season 12, Episode Sees Burgess & Atwater Go In The Field

They Make Initial Contact With Ruby, The CI Who Causes All The Trouble

Atwater and Burgess are the first to make contact with Ruby, knocking on her grandmother’s door. Ruby sends her grandmother away so she can talk with the cops briefly, but is uninterested in talking to them, instead telling them to look her up at the strip club and pay her for the time if they want to continue the conversation. Although this initial contact doesn’t get them very far, it is an important scene — it not only introduces Ruby, butputs Atwater and Burgess back together as partners.

Atwater and Burgess used to be partners when they were both patrol officers inChicago PDseason 1. However, Atwater was promoted at the end of that season, and Burgess joined Intelligence in season 4. Thus, the two have not had many opportunities to work together in the most recent seasons of the long-running procedural, and it was refreshing for them to finally go back into the field together in “Name Image Likeness.”

Why Burgess Is Best Teamed Up With Atwater Than Anyone Else

She Feels Less Pressure With Him Than With Other People

Burgess is more relaxed with Atwater than with anyone else. She works well with Ruzek (John Patrick Flueger), but there is still some pressure or anxiety there because of their personal relationship — in addition to being worried about his safety, there’s a risk that wrong moves at work could lead to arguments at home. This is a different dynamic than when she works with Cook or Torres, which can also pose issues for her.

WhenChicago PDputs Burgess and Atwater together, there is no pressure because the two are friends who know each other well without having an intimate relationship.

Chicago PD’s Kiana Cookis the newest addition to the team and Burgess far outranks her. Thus, Burgess must be the boss when she works with Cook or Torres, which is a higher-pressure situation for her. Conversely, whenChicago PDputs Burgess and Atwater together, there is no pressure because the two are friends who know each other well without having an intimate relationship. This makes their team-up more enjoyable to watch.
