Not too long ago,Critical Roleannounced the beginning of aKickstartercampaign for an animated special it’s calling “The Legend of Vox Machina”, with the American web series initially aiming to raise $750,000 for the project. Now, the push for funding has far exceeded the initial goal, with financing having surpassed $4.4 million as of writing, and the number is steadily growing.
According toCritical Role’s official Kickstarter page, “The Legend of Vox Machina” is a brand new story crafted by the show’s cast and scripted by writer Jennifer Muro (Star Wars: Forces of Destiny,Spider-Man). The project is set to be an in-canon adventure that takes place before the events of the original show, and due to the substantial amount of funding, what was initially going to be a 22-minute animated special will now be an 88-minute feature length production.
Critical Roledeclares that the vast majority of the Kickstarter campaign’s resources will be going into the animation budget, with the American animation studio Titmouse handling the visuals. The cartoon company has been behind a bevy of different shows, includingCartoon Network’sMetalocalypseandThe Venture Brothers.
For the uninitiated,Critical Roleis a live-streamed weeklyDungeons & Dragonsgame played by voice actors from TV shows such asTransformersandSpider-Man, and video games likeOverwatch,The Last of Us,Fallout, and more. The show is currently in its second season, with over 50 episodes under its belt.
TheCritical Roleteam has stated that it intends on releasing “The Legend of Vox Machina” at some point in the fall of 2020, with those who have contributed to theDungeon & Dragonslive streaming show’s Kickstarter campaign set to receive rewards in May 2020. Depending on the funding level, one can receive such perks as a sticker set, downloads forCritical Role’s theme song “Your Turn to Roll”, a campaign-exclusive 8x10 limited edition art print, a “Legend of Vox Machina” dice set, and more.
The campaign on Kickstarter has been scheduled to run for 45 days total. As of writing,Critical Role’s funding for the “The Legend of Vox Machina” currently has upwards of 33,000 backers.
