Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 1.Dexter: Resurrectionrevealed some new information about Debra Morgan’s (Jennifer Carpenter) death in the originalDexter, and it makes an old complaint about the franchise even worse.Dexter: Resurrectionis thelatestDexterseriesand a direct continuation of theending ofNew Blood. While it is the furthest forwardDexterhas ever gotten,Resurrectionstill hasn’t figured out a problem the franchise has had for years.

Dexterfans have longcriticized Miami Metro for being incompetentand failing to catch Dexter. A serial killer was right under their noses for decades, and only James Doakes (Erik King) ever got suspicious of him? There are plenty of moments inDexterthat should have at least raised suspicions that are simply brushed off. It’s a problem as old as the franchise itself, butResurrectionjust made it worse.

Miami Metro Really Still Didn’t Suspect Dexter Of Being A Criminal After Watching Him Mercy Kill Deb?

Normal People Don’t Mercy Kill Their Sister & Die To Suicide By Hurricane, But Miami Metro Never Found That Suspicious

In the premiere ofDexter: Resurrection, Angel Batista (David Zayas) briefly reminisces on his history with Dexter, including theending of the originalDexterseries. During that scene,Angel explains that Miami Metro actually had footage of Dexter carrying Deb out of the hospital while the hurricane was making landfall. It was a simple reference to how Dexter mercy killed Deb, but it also raised some implicit questions.

Angel’s comments inResurrection, that Miami Metro had video proof of Dexter taking Deb’s body, make it even harder to believe that they never thought Dexter was some kind of criminal. Miami Metro had video proof that Dexter at least stole a body and likely mercy killed Deb, yet Batista still never thought he could have been a killer until Angela (Julia Jones) called him inDexter: New Blood.

The video of Dexter stealing Deb’s body is just the last example of a string of moments where Dexter’s facade slipped. It alone wouldn’t have clued anybody in that he was the Bay Harbor Butcher, but it should have at least caused someone at Miami Metro to think he was hiding something. Dexter euthanized his own sister and drove into a hurricane. That should have been a warning sign for the police.

Mercy killings in general also aren’t legal in the state of Florida. If Batista had video footage of Dexter walking out with Deb, it wouldn’t be a leap to assume he also pulled the plug on her, which is objectively a crime in Miami. Obviously, they wouldn’t prosecute a dead man, but it still should have raised suspicions about Dexter long before Angela reached out.

Why Dexter Lied To Batista About How He Buried Deb’s Body

Dexter Is Inherently Paranoid About His Secret Getting Out & A Burial At Sea Would Be Too Suspicious

There was another part of Angel and Dexter’s initial conversation that flew under the radar: Dexter lied about what he did with Deb’s body.Dexter told Angel inResurrectionthat Deb washed away with him when he rode into the hurricane, but we know that he buried Deb at sea. He also didn’t know that Angela had told Batista her Bay Harbor Butcher theory yet, so it didn’t seem like there was a good reason to lie.

The simplest reason Dexter lied about how he buried Deb is that he’s inherently paranoid about anyone finding out his secret, and the truth was just too suspicious.Telling Batista that he had buried Deb at sea would have been very similar to the way the Bay Harbor Butcher buried victims at sea. After years of hiding, it was an instinctual lie to distance himself from the serial killer case.

Claiming that Deb simply washed away in the hurricane also supports Dexter’s cover story. If Dexter told Batista he stopped to give Deb a burial at sea andthenrode into the hurricane, it would be a lot more suspicious. That detail alone would turn Dexter’s disappearance from a moment of pure grief and a rash decision to a moment of regret and desperation, which is one step closer to the truth.
