The stars have aligned for a Necromancer from China, as they are the first player inDiablo 4to obtain The Grandfather. Though players can assembleDiablo 4endgame buildswithout relying on the six super rare Uniques, having one drop is an extremely significant boost to character power that cannot be ignored. Unlike the relatively balanced tiers of Legendary items inDiablo 3, the sequel’s philosophy aligns more with games such asPath of Exileby offering a step above the regular Legendaries and Uniques.
These “Chase Uniques” are unimaginably hard to obtain, and Lead Class Designer Adam Jackson previously posted thesix rarest items inDiablo 4that currently make up the deepest bottom of the loot pool. Though fans have expressed concern that the rarity of these Uniques is grossly overtuned, it has made the chase exciting to follow beforeDiablo 4officially enters its seasonal content phase.

With two instances of Harlequin Crest dropping for lucky players, as well as an Andariel’s Visage and a Doombringer, this marks the fifth Chase Unique drop in the world thus far. Though The Grandfather is a best-in-slot weapon for Whirlwind Barbarian builds in particular, all five classes inDiablo 4greatly benefit from its high stat rolls. The Grandfather was obtained from a Helltide cache, and the drop was submitted by Icy-Heat7531 on theDiablo 4subreddit, with 0neTwo providing an unofficial translation from the original Chinese tooltips.
The only two Chase Uniques that remain to be found are Ring of the Starless Skies, and the Melted Heart of Selig. An unfortunate downside of the current state ofDiablo 4’s itemization is that even the rarest Uniques have a chance to roll with awful attributes. Usually stats that prioritize Cooldown Reduction, Vulnerable, or Skill Ranks trump everything else, making the majority of rolls be useless as upgrades. While this makes sense for the run-of-the-mill Uniques and Legendaries,Diablo 4players feel Chase Uniques should be exempt from this rule given their overall rarity.
The Grandfather is the one of the most iconic weapons across allDiablotitles, and its iteration inDiablo 4certainly measures up to its predecessors. Given theseasonal content format inDiablo 4, the developers may be holding back on Chase Uniques, with plans to either increase the drop rates or introduce new items such as Azurewrath for the coming Seasons. After all, almost a month has passed since the launch ofDiablo 4, and only five players have obtained these Uniques so far. Extrapolated onto a season’s full length, it would average out to 15 lucky players perDiablo 4season, which feels absurd given the game’s thriving population.
Diablo 4is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
