Diablo 4players may have just discovered a hidden feature of the game, where the rats scurrying around the game’s dungeons seem to lead the player toward the best loot drops. Seeking out loot in dungeons is one of the core gameplay loops ofDiablo 4, so this discovery has the potential to give players a serious leg up in advancing their characters, assuming there’s anything of substance to it.
Since the game’s release in early June, players have been delving deep into the sprawling dungeons ofDiablo 4in search of the game’s rarest and most valuable items, as well as seeking whatever secrets the world might hold. Fans are constantlylearning new thingsaboutDiablo 4,as the expansive action RPG is full of content to explore.

One such discovery seems to have been made by Reddit user Zerger45, who recently took to theDiablo 4subreddit to share something they had observed about the rats scurrying around in the game’s dungeons. Far from mere set dressing, the user claimed that these rats were actively leading them toward the most valuable loot in a given dungeon. Groups of rats would seemingly move deliberately through the dungeon toward specific groups of enemies, and those foes would consistently drop some of the rarest loot in the game. Zerger45’s strategy of “following the rats” apparently netted them multiple legendary items in only 10 minutes, a remarkable drop rate for some of themost coveted loot inDiablo 4. However, it’s yet to be proven if the rats actually do lead to the best loot in the dungeons or if it’s all a big coincidence.
While Zerger45 did not provide any proof of their discovery in the original post, other players seemed to confirm the effectiveness of following the rats. Shortly after Zerger45 shared the rat strategy, another user, ILoveObjects, made a post in the same subreddit titled “I followed the rats,” accompanied by a screenshot of an Ancestral Unique ring, one of themost precious ultra-rare items inDiablo 4. The user went on to claim that they had been grinding various sources for two days in search of this ring, with no success: upon seeing the rat post, they simply “followed some rats” and found the highly valuable item almost straight away.
So far, there has been no word from the game’s developers about whether the rats truly lead to good loot inDiablo 4,and it is difficult to say for certain if there is a substantial link. It could just be a coincidence. However, multiple players seem ready to swear by the strategy’s efficacy, indicating that they may indeed have stumbled upon a powerful secret built into the game. Considering theextremely low drop rate ofDiablo 4’s best items, any strategy that might offer a better chance at finding them will definitely be appealing to many players.
