During Marvel’sX-Menpanel, the publisher offered an early look (viaAiPT) at Galactus arriving to face Gambit’s mutant team inUnbreakable X-Men#1:
Why Galactus would seek out Haven House in New Orleans specifically is anyone’s guess. But the preview art shows a fairly clear sequence of events: witnessing the arrival of Galactus,Rogue looks to Gambit, touches Galactus with her hand, and a massive explosionsends the World-Eater and the mutants flying.
While the idea of Rogue attempting to use her powers on Galactus, and the cosmic giant repelling the act don’t spell death on their own, the transformation of Gambit seems to reveal the devastating outcome. Marvel might have shown the moment Rogue forever changes"X Years Later."
The New Look for Gambit is Hiding Rogue’s Death in Plain Sight
Sadly, this glimpse of Rogue putting herself into harm’s way for the sake of the mutants gathered to her and Gambit isn’t the full story. The truth is revealed (potentially) by Gambit’s new costume, having altered his color scheme to the yellow and green of his wife.
With more artwork now reveals, it’s impossible to overlookGambit’s green scarf and blindfold bearing a striking resemblance to Rogue’s famous uniform. Or what tatters remain of it, if Rogue is truly killed, or transformed. Or even worse,motivated to leave her fan-favorite husband.
When the earlyUnbreakable X-Mencover revealed a headstone for Rogue, many assumed it was most likely symbolic, and unlikely a spoiler of such scale. But with this new scene revealed without commentary, Marvel may have tipped their hand.
