Over the last several years, numerous rumors, fueled by teases and oblique statements, about a new entry in theSplinter Cellfranchise have been circulating. While theseSplinter Cellrumorshave kept fans thinking about the series, a recent tweet seemingly offered confirmation that a newSplinter Cellis indeed in the works. However, this tweet was promptly followed by a statement from Ubisoft, which looks to backtrack completely on the confirmation.
The tweet in question came fromThe Division 2Creative Director Julian Gerighty, and it was quite straightforward in its indication. Specifically, Gerighty’s tweet stated that he is working with Dan Hay, executive producer at Ubisoft Montreal, and Roman Campos Oriola, creative director at Ubisoft Montreal, on the nextSplinter Celltitle. Additionally, the tweet seemingly suggested that this newSplinter Cellcould be shown at E3 2019.
Furthermore, Gerighty’s post was accompanied by a number of images, one of which appeared to depict the personnel in question enjoying some glasses of wine. The suggestion here seemed to be that this casualSplinter Cellannouncementwas not officially authorized, but a statement from Ubisoft has complicated matters further, as it indicates that the whole thing was simply a joke being made by Gerighty.
In Ubisoft’s response, the company states that “Julian was obviously joking as Julian likes to do. It looks like our creative directors are having fun right now.” Ubisoft followed that up with: “We do not have any announcements to make at this time.”
While Ubisoft’s response could simply be an attempt to do damage control on an unauthorizedSplinter Cellannouncement, it is likely best to take the statement at face value. Certainly, Gerighty could just delete his tweet if it was actually in conflict with Ubisoft’s wishes, and that has not been done at this point.
That said, the tweet’s indication that a newSplinter Cellcould beshown during E3 2019means that fans will know soon enough what the truth of the matter is here. Hopefully, for those that are clamoring for moreSplinter Cell, the contents of Gerighty’s tweet will ultimately prevail.
