While all othercharacters inSmokewere fooled, Michelle actually suspected him from the start.
Episode 3 dives deeper into these suspicions, showing she’s been investigating him on her own for quite some time now. The episode even showcases part of her quest for answers, whereshe uses a technique to find one of Dave’s incendiary devices. However, theevents ofSmokesignal Dave might already know she suspects him of being the arsonist.
Dave Changing His Usual Arson Routine Might Mean He Knows Michelle Is Investigating Him
Episode 3 Sees An Attack From Him He’s Never Done Before
Near the start of episode 3, when Michelle tells him about what she’ll be investigating that day,Dave pauses for a notable amount of time.He seems afraid of what she’ll find, something that proves to be well-founded when she discovers one of his incendiary devices. Slowly, she’s inching closer to knowing for sure he’s their big serial arsonist culprit.
This may have been why, late into the episode, he targets a woman with an expensive car,throwing a Molotov cocktail into it while she’s washing it. However, he makes sure she sees what he’s wearing, as if he wanted Michelle to be able to identify the culprit as their serial arsonist. Yet the crime doesn’t match his usual operations.
Because he changed up how he approaches his arson attacks, thecrime TV showmight be hinting thathe’s doing so to try and throw Michelle off his trail. If he’s aware that her investigation at the start of the episode could implicate him, then changing up how he operates might be his way of trying to dissuade her suspicions.
Dave Probably Can’t Trick Michelle For Long
She’s Resourceful Enough That She’ll Figure It Out Eventually
If Dave is trying tocurtail Michelle’s investigation,it’s going to take more than just changing up how he commits his arson attacks. She already suspects he’s the one behind them, following her intuition and finding proof that could implicate him already. Her only stonewall is being able to pursue the investigation on her own behind his back.
Although he can continue trying to ensure she doesn’t find out he’s the arsonist with the fake limp,Smokeis already laying the groundwork for her investigation to succeed.It will take some cunning for him to circumvent the inevitable, but it’s growing increasingly likely that he can’t avoid her discovering the truth.
