Details about the game at the time of announcement were muddled, but one thing was clear - an announcement trailer was coming as part of theDragon Ball FighterZWorld Tour Finals. The finals came to a conclusion Sunday night (congratulations, Kazunoko), andProject Z’s announcement trailer debuted.
Here’s what’s newly known aboutDragon Ball Z’sProject Z, which isn’t the game’s final title. The action RPG will focus on the story ofDragon Ball Zas we know it. That includes the fight with Raditz and the training of Gohan through the Saiyan and Frieza sagas, with players experiencing the game through Goku’s eyes. The game’s developer has also been confirmed to be CyberConnect2, best known for the.hackandNaruto: Ultimate Ninja Stormseries. Finally, the game’s release date is confirmed for 2019.
TheDragon Ball ZProject Ztrailer doesn’t offer much further clarification, but it does provide a glimpse at the visual style players can expect. Much of the trailer seems to be in-engine cinematics, featuring a level of detail somewhere betweenDragon Ball FighterZandDragon Ball Xenoverse. However, towards the end of the trailer what looks to be a bit of gameplay is teased. Goku is seen walking through an assortment of locations, which emphasizes that there is some RPG to be found inProject Z.
Plenty of questions remain regarding just what kind of game thisDragon Ball Zaction RPG will be. Given the developer’s past games includingAsura’s Wrathand the.hackseries, it’s clear it can work well within the action and RPG genres. But how those two genres will be brought together and whether CyberConnect2 can maintain that authenticDragon Ball Zfeel is yet to be determined.
