The nextSuper Mario Bros. 35event has been revealed, and it is an important one because it will likely be the final challenge for the special online game. TheSuper Mario Bros. 35servers will shut down on July 20, 2025.
Nintendo has been celebrating the 35 year anniversary ofSuper Mario, but thecelebration for Mario is coming to a close. And that means thatSuper Mario Bros. 35will soon be shut down for good. While some games, likeSuper Mario 3D All-Stars, are simply being taken off shelves–meaning those who purchase the games will still be able to play them–Super Mario Bros. 35will soon be unplayable, which means players will want to take full advantage of this new and final World Count Challenge.

The third and finalSuper Mario Bros. 35World Count Challenge will run from March 23 at 12 pm PT through March 29 at 11:59 pm PT. Players will work together to collect 350 million coins, and if that goal is achieved, everyone who participated will receive 350 My Nintendo Platinum Points. The last time a challenge like this was put on the table for fans of the game,Super Mario Bros. 35players failed to reach the World Count Challenge goal. So hopefully–especially considering this looks to be the last challenge–fans will come through this time.
It is still difficult to fully understand what Nintendo’s goal is with this 35-year celebration ofSuper Mario. While it makes all the sense to put out collectibles, games, and more of everyone’s favorite plumber, it makes less sense to make a game likeSuper Mario All-Starsa limited time digital purchase in an online eShop or to haveSuper Mario Bros. 35go away entirely after being enjoyed by so many. Perhaps eventually the plan will be revealed by The Big N, but right now it seems more disappointing and disheartening than something celebratory for Nintendo and Mario fans.
Super Mario Bros. 35is available now for Switch.
