For Honor’s Creative Director, Jason VandenBerghe, has confirmed that he has left his position within Ubisoft’s Montreal studio. VandenBerghe leapt into the spotlight after personallyannouncingFor Honorto the world during E3 2015, with all the energy of a Viking berserker himself. Prior to Ubisoft, VandenBerghe held positions at both Activision and EA, a veteran of the trade. He departs after spending 9 years at Ubisoft, spent across several successful projects.
Jason VandenBerghe had this to say of his time at Ubisoft following his departure:
“I’ve had nine amazing years at Ubisoft. It has been the best experience of my career. In many ways, I was forged by that place. I leave it full of gratitude for everything I was given the chance to do there, a profound love for all the amazing people who make that place what it is (imagine hundreds of FB tags here), and a bright hope for the company’s future. I look forward to playing all y’all’s games, now and into the future.”
VandenBerghe then asks Ubisoft and his old team to take good care ofFor Honorand that he’s excited about where they take it from here.
Part of why VandenBerghe made his public post about leaving Ubisoft was to also announce his plans for where he’s going. VandenBerghe had already accepted a position with ArenaNet, which is now almost 5 years andone major expansion intoGuild Wars 2. ArenaNet has yet to announce a second expansion, but is continuing to release Living World chapters which move the world’s story forward month to month.
As excited as VandenBerghe seemed for the change in his Facebook post, he admitted he was reticent to leave Ubisoft at first. It took the persuasive powers of Isaiah Cartwright, Design Director at ArenaNet, to persuade him:
“The story is long and complicated. The tl;dr version is that I went out there on a lark–and then fell head-over-heels in love. Isaiah did an amazing job of setting the table… but it was all the people that I met there there that sealed the deal.
