Rory’s A Year In The Life Story Didn’t Work

Rory’s Character Was Almost Unrecognizable In A Year In The Life

While Lauren Graham’s Lorelai was grappling with similar emotional battles and was a familiar part ofA Year in the Life, the Rory we met in the revival was practically a stranger. Though her career trajectory makes sense in some ways, as Rory got many things handed to her in her youth, her behavior and romances were difficult to stomach.

From cheating with Logan (Matt Czuchry) to treating her mostly off-screen boyfriend, Paul, terribly, Rory was directionless and struggling, and while it was a logical character arc, it was tough to watch. Rory, so consistently struggling and making all the wrong choices, didn’t leave much room forGilmore Girlsto explore its classic themes and storylines.

All of this became even more intense inthe last-minute plot twist that revealed Rory’s pregnancy to Lorelai.InA Year in the Life, Lorelai was healing her old wounds and finding a way to commit to her life with Luke (Scott Patterson). Rory is essentially repeating Lorelai’s trajectory, which was a dramatic way of bringing the show full circle.

Rory’s Baby Could Give Her Story A Focus In Gilmore Girls Season 9

This Unexpected Plot Twist Might Be What Season 9 Needs

ConcludingA Year in the Lifeon this cliffhanger was a bold choice for Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the creators ofGilmore Girls. However, in some ways,Rory’s ending inA Year in the Lifeis a natural extension of theGilmore Girlsworld, and creates the immediate need to see what’s happening with her and the baby.

Gilmore Girlsis all about mothers and daughters, and how the way a child is raised changes the kind of person they become. Audiences have seen Lorelai and Emily’s (Kelly Bishop) dynamic, and Lorelai and Rory’s.It only makes sense that Rory would have the opportunity to discover what kind of mother she wants to be,learning from the mistakes of her mom and grandmother.

WhereasRory’s arc inA Year in the Lifewas messy, seeing the character spin in circles for much of the story, having a kid would sharpen not only Rory’s focus but also the show’s. This is what the revival was missing. Though it was engaging to see what the characters were up to, there was no real justification for coming back to Stars Hollow.

Rory’s Pregnancy Twist Is Better If We Get To See What Happens Next

The Cliffhanger Would Work If Rory Gets The Ending She Deserves

Though the effects of parenting are felt inGilmore GirlsandA Year in the Life, the audience never gets to see the early years of a Gilmore raising their children.Watching the three generations of women come together to pool their skillsand knowledge to parent the next generation of Gilmores would be something viewers have never seen before.

There would be incredible opportunities for new family dynamics, learning and growing, and a return to what we love most about the TV show.

Gilmore Girlstakes its controversial storylines farin every season of the show, so there’s no reason why an additional season of the show shouldn’t bring Rory’s motherhood arc to the finish line. There would be incredible opportunities for new family dynamics, learning and growing, and a return to what we love most about the TV show.

Similarly to the way that Lorelai does a lot of growing and keeps coming of age well into Rory’s adulthood, Rory would evolve tremendously in the wake of her child’s birth.Gilmore Girlshas always done a great job of allowing each of its characters to be flawed while leaving them plenty of room to come into themselves.
