Ever since its initial public reveal during E3 2016, it’s obvious that the forthcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive,God of War, is going to be a major departure from the franchise’s previous entries, with just one among many changes being a completeremoval of the jump button. Now, it looks like the action-adventure epic is going to be different from its predecessors in yet another way, as it appears as if some boss fights will be optional.
While speaking during an interview with The Game Informer Show,God of Wardirector Cory Barlog recently explained that players will either have the choice to take on some of the game’s big brutes and tough bosses head on, or avoid them in favor of sticking to the mission at hand. For those unaware, this change marks the first instance in the action-adventure franchise featuring boss fights that are actually optional.

While someGod of Warfans might be quick to express ire over the fact that the game will offer optional boss battles, it’s important to discern exactly what was said within the interview between Barlog and Game Informer. To be specific, Ben Hanson asked, “Are there optional bosses in the game?” Barlog succinctly replied, “Yes,” and the subject was not explored any further. With this being the case, it doesn’t necessarily mean thatallboss fights are optional, but it does at least confirm there will be some battles with big baddies that can be avoided.
Taking all of this into consideration, Sony and Santa Monica Studio’sGod of Warappears to be shaping up as quite the unique entry in the series, as Barlog and his development team seem intent on subverting players' expectations of what one should expect from a game with Kratos as its protagonist. Thankfully, with itsrelease dateon the horizon, fans won’t have to wait much longer to assume the mantle of the Ghost of Sparta once more.
God of Waris set to launch on July 27, 2025 for PlayStation 4.
