Stellan Skarsgård shares an ominous tease about Luthen Rael’s story inAndorseason 2, hinting that the Rebellion founder is running out of options. Set to return on April 22, the Disney+ series will continue exploring the story of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and the growing Rebel Alliance prior toRogue One: A Star Wars Story. Using the guise of a dealer of art and relics on Coruscant,Rael establishes a network of rebellious individuals and cellsfrom across the galaxy. He will return inAndorseason 2alongside several other familiar faces.
While speaking toHello Magazine, Skarsgård offered a tease about Luthen’s trajectory inAndorseason 2. Stating that because the Empire is becoming more aware of his role in insurgencies across the galaxy, Luthen is left with few options, and may be forced to give it all for the cause. His position is becoming more and more dangerous because he’s working himself into the society and the Empire is closing in.He has to burn his future.
Luthen’s Fate Was Set Up In His Best Scene
Rael Has Always Been Aware Of His Mortality
Much like howRogue Oneshowed the harsh cost of taking down the Galactic Empire, fewAndorcharactersare guaranteed to survive season 2, save for Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma and Cassian himself. When it comes to Luthen, several moments in season 1 put him at risk, butone pivotal moment likely sealed his fate. As Luthen meets with his ISB insider Lonni Jung (Robert Emms), he is questioned about the sacrifices he made, leading to Skarsgård delivering a powerful monologue.
In his speech, Luthen not only acknowledges what he has given both physically and ideologically, but also reveals his journey has already left him with little hope of finding peace, and that he expects he won’t even live long enough to see it.Andorshowrunner Tony Gilroy has described Luthen’s ideology as being that of someone who is set to hasten and bring about change through their actions, as seen with him establishing a network. As such, despite his prominence,Luthen was always meant to be a small part of a greater movement.

Andor Is All About The Cost Of Rebellion
Luthen’s Fate May Be Sealed, But His Last Stand Is Still Yet To Be Seen
Luthen Rael immediately intriguedAndorviewersupon its premiere, setting himself apart from both the idealistic and optimistic Mon Mothma and the more pragmatic and ruthless Saw Gerrera (Forrest Whittaker).Luthen walked the line between both figureheads' methodologies, able to understand their thought process, act within both of their worlds, and ultimately align them for a common goal. While the extent of his network is still yet to be explored, his role in forming the Rebellion is unquestionably important.
However, it is also hard to deny that, even in season 1, Luthen’s methods were shifting. He was willing to take on riskier moves to further this cause. As such, given his absence inRogue One: A Star Wars story,it is likely that Luthen’s days will be numberedasAndorseason 2 nears the eventsof the movie. The question, however, is just how Luthen will decide to spend his last moments, or whether his actions will catch up to him before he has the chance.
