Of all thecharacters inSmoke,Michelle is the one most on top of the ongoing arsonist investigations. While she’s working with Dave,Smokeepisode 2 endedby revealing he’s one of the serial arsonists.
This means, despite seeming getting help from Dave because of his role as an arson investigator, she’s actually on her own. This will likely put her in a more difficult position as the series progresses. However, one recent decision she made in episode 2 indicatesthestory ofSmokewill add a major new obstacleto her investigation.
Michelle Shot Scotty Believing He Was Her Serial Arsonist
She Quickly Realized Her Mistake & Improvised
During the arson investigation,Michelle believes a firefighter named Scotty is a strong suspectfor their serial arsonist touting a limp. This is because his absences line up with dates certain arsonist fires were started. Upon confrontation, he heavily conflicted with Michelle, insulting and berating her, believing she hadn’t truly earned her status as a detective.
This came to a head when she investigated his bunker, finding a dungeon of sorts alongside an arsenal of guns.Scotty arrives and she shoots him, learning from their conversation that he’s not actually the arsonist. She realizes her mistake and calls in what happened, crafting a different narrative than what the reality of the situation was.
When the ATF arrivesshe says she suspected Scotty of doing something heinous with his arsenal of guns. She also lied about the situation to justify why she was in his bunker without a warrant. This twist in thecrime drama TV showmay have absolved her of her actions for now, but that doesn’t mean their conflict is over.
How Michelle Shooting Scotty Could Hinder Her Investigation
It’s Her Word Against His, For Now
Michelle may have concocted a story justifying her trespassing, butif Scotty can prove his word against his, then she’ll likely be punished. If he’s somehow able to prove he wasn’t going to use his weapons for harm, it could hinder her investigation into the arsonists as she deals with the new problem.
Given that episode 2 revealedDave is one of the arsonists, he could try and help Scotty with his situation. This could happen if Michelle gets too close to the truth, using the incident to purposefully hinder her. WithSmokehaving just started, it remains to be seen whether the situation will return, and if it will harm the investigation.
