It’s become a pretty common fan theory that Eleven will die inStranger Thingsseason 5, but that would be a far too obvious way for the Duffer brothers to end the series. Although a solid premiere date has yet to be announced,Stranger Thingswill finally end this year with its fifth and final season. As the hit Netflix show heads into its final outing, fans are making theirpredictions forStranger Thingsseason 5.

These theories range from Kali making an unexpected return toEddie coming back in the form of Vecna’s demonic right-hand man Kas.One of the most popular theories is that the series will end with Eleven’s death, and while that would certainly be tragic and there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the audience,it would also be a disappointingly predictable way to endthis decade of storytelling. The Duffers and their creative team need to come up with a more surprising way to conclude theStranger Thingssaga.

Eleven Dying Would Be Too Obvious Of An Ending For Stranger Things

Killing Off Eleven Would Be Predictable & Underwhelming

I understand why it’s a popular theory that Eleven will die inStranger Things’ final season. The story started off with Mike and his friends putting their lives on the line to keep Eleven safe, soit would be poetic for Eleven to make the ultimate sacrifice to save them in the end. But Eleven has risked her life for her friends a couple of times now; it’s just that, when it seems like she’s dead, it turns out she’s still alive.

It would wrap things up a bit too neatly for the story that began with Mike saving Eleven to end with Eleven dying to save Mike. If the audience can see where a story is going, then they ultimately end up disappointed by it. Sometimes, surprising the audience can backfire, too, when the ending feels incongruous to the established characters, like the endings ofDexterorGame of Thrones, butit’s a matter of finding a nice middle ground.

Stranger Things Season 5 Should Kill A Main Character (But Not Eleven)

It’s About Time Stranger Things Killed Off Someone From The Main Cast

Don’t get me wrong; I thinkStranger Thingsshould definitely kill off a main characterin its final season. This show has never killed off a member of the main cast, and it makes their deadly paranormal predicaments seem a lot less deadly. It would add to the finality of season 5to kill off someone who’s been around since season 1. I just don’t think it should be Eleven. She’s had too many fake-out deaths for a real death to land properly inStranger Things’ series finale.
