At long last, it seems likeCyberpunk: Edgerunnersmight finally be getting a sequel.Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersis one of the biggest anime to come out of the 2020s, with it even surpassingCyberpunk 2077, the game it spun off of, in popularity, and because of that, while the story ended rather conclusively, it hasn’t stopped fans from wanting a sequel.

WhileCyberpunk: Edgerunnerswasn’t originally written to go past what was already put out, it seems like that’s finally set to change. In late 2024,Netflix released aCyberpunkanime teaserconfirming moreCyberpunkanime content was in development, and now withCyberpunk: Edgerunnersgetting a panel at Anime Expo 2025,it’s all but confirmed thatCyberpunk: Edgerunnerswill be getting a sequel of some sort. There’s no telling what that would entail, but with how greatCyberpunk: Edgerunnersis, there’s no reason not to be excited.

Why Has Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 Been Taking So Long?

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2’s Big Delay Explained

WithCyberpunk: Edgerunnersseemingly getting a second season, that begs the question of why it took so long for it to happen at all. For starters, Studio Trigger, the studio behindCyberpunk: Edgerunners, has been incredibly busy sinceEdgerunnerscame out, as they’ve not only been working onDelicious in DungeonandGridman Universe, but the upcomingPanty & Stocking with Garterbeltsequel, as well. Hiroyuki Imaishi, who directedEdgerunners, is even personally directingPanty & Stocking, so overall,Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersseason 2 has been taking so long because Studio Trigger hasn’t had the time for it.

More than that, of course, is how the series was constructed. Not only did the series end on a very conclusive note, albeit a bittersweet one, but CDPR community manager Satoru Honma outright said thatthere were no plans for moreCyberpunk: Edgerunners, soCyberpunk: Edgerunnershasn’t received a second season because it was never designed for one. All signs point to something having changed in that regard, but it’s still easy to see why it’s been taking as long as it has.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2’s Potential Story Explained

Now thatCyberpunk: Edgerunnersseason 2 is all but confirmed, that begs the question of what it would be about. In the aforementioned interview with Satoru Honma, he said that while there were no plans for a second season at the time, if they were to do one, then it wouldn’t be a continuation of the original story, but something completely different set in the same world. In short,Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersseason 2, if it’s happening, would be more of a spiritual successor than a straightforward sequel, and characters from season 1 would probably only make brief cameos at best.

That idea might be disappointing to some, but as great as it would be to see more of Lucy and the few other characters who survived the events of season 1, there’s only so much that could be done with them that wouldn’t ruin where their stories ended, soCyberpunk: Edgerunnersseason 2 being largely divorced from season 1 is the best way to continue the world without ruining what came before it. All of this is hypothetical, of course, but hopefully,Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Anime Expo panel will clarify what people can expect from the franchise, going forward.
