Jujutsu Kaisen0reportedlyearned ¥2,694,128,150 (roughly US$23.5 million) in its first three days, topping the Japanese box office during its opening weekend.

The film is outpacing 2021sEvangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time, which stood as the year’s highest-earning film. The fourth and final entry in theRebuild of Evangelionfilm series earned ¥6,078,211,750 (roughly US$55.49 million) and sold 3,961,480 tickets in its first three weeks at the box office.
The film is based on Gege Akutami’sJujutsu Kaisen 0manga, aprequel to the popularJujutsu Kaisenmanga series. Initially named Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School,Jujutsu Kaisen 0ran in Shueisha’s Jump GIGA magazine from April-July 2017.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Moviewas animated by MAPPA, with Sunghoo Park (Banana Fish,The God of High School) directing and Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan,Dorohedoro) serving as screenwriter. Thefilm starsMegumi Ogata (Evangelion’sShinji Ikari,YuYu Hakusho’sKurama) as Yuta Okkotsu, with Kana Hanazawa(Steins;Gate’sMayuri Shiina,Psycho-Pass’Akane Tsunemori) voicing Rika Orimoto.
Akutami’sJujutsu Kaisenmanga began serializationin 2018, running in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. The series has amassed 18 collected volumes throughout its run so far, and as of December 2021 had over 60 million copies in circulation. MAPPA animated a 24-episode anime adaptation from 2020-2021, with Park and Seko serving as director and screenwriter, respectively.
VIZ Media licenses the manga in English alongside JujutsuKaisen 0. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan, and VIZ Media owns the home video rights.
