Kaiju No. 8delivered a much better episode with episode #14, and it left plenty to be excited about for episode #15 and beyond. Season 2 doesn’t appear to be wasting any time getting into the thick of its story, and while pacing has been an issue in the past, ideally, that won’t be a problem for season 2 going forward.
InKaiju No. 8episode #14, the First Division responded to the sudden sinkhole from the end of the season 2 premiere, forcing them into a battle with an army of ant-like Kaiju that was soon revealed to be part of a larger plot. It was an episode that did a great job of building tension early on, and there’s no telling where things will go from here.

Kaiju No. 8 Episode 13 Review: A Surprisingly Lackluster Premiere
Kaiju No. 8 Episode 13 In Review
There was plenty of hype for theKaiju No. 8season 2premiere, but unfortunately, it didn’t do much to live up to it. Not only was the episode incredibly light on action, but the narrative bits were also fairly shallow, as they were focused primarily on setting up new events for season 2. Nothing is different from how things went in the manga, but that doesn’t change howKaiju No. 8’s poor pacing kept season 2 from premiering on a high note.
That doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth watching, of course. Not only was the animation as great as ever, butGen Narumialready looks to be a great addition to the cast, and even with the episode mostly being setup, everything it’s building to has a perfect air of suspense to it all that will be great to watch play out. Despite a bad start,Kaiju No. 8is still plenty exciting, and sure enough, episode #14 was much better.

What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode 14?
Produced By Production I.G; Directed By Kazuma Sato
Kaiju No. 8episode #14, “The Next Generation’s Trial”, opened with Kafka and Kikoru starting their new lives in the First Division, with Kafka still struggling with basic training and Kikoru struggling to deal with Narumi’s man-child antics. However, everyone’s antics were quickly interrupted by news of a massive sinkhole releasing an army of ant-like Kaiju, and the First Division was sent to deal with it.
The First Division, for the most part, had an easy time dealing with the Kaiju, with Kikoru even impressing everyone with her natural talent. However, Narumi noted how unusual it was for ant-like Kaiju to go above ground and in such large numbers, and he suspected that it might be like the Tachikawa base incident, where someone was controlling them.

As that was happening, Kafka tried to fight the Kaiju in a separate area, but for some reason, he couldn’t take on his Kaiju form. It was a terrible situation to be in, and it only got worse when Kaiju No. 9 suddenly spawned from one of the Kaiju to try to kill Kafka.
Narumi, alerted to the danger Kafka was in, tried to go help him, but his path was blocked by a Kaiju controlled by another Kaiju No. 9. Narumi didn’t know why there were two copies of No. 9, but that didn’t stop him from fighting it, and he even joked that someone like him was more worthy of its time than Kafka.

Back with Kafka, even with the threat of No. 9 and the deaths of other soldiers, Kafka, for some reason, still couldn’t turn into Kaiju No. 8. With Kafka being so defenseless, Kaiju No. 9 was poised to kill Kafka, but before that could happen,Kikoru arrived to save Kafka and fight Kaiju No. 9, herself.
Kaiju No. 8 Gets Its Story Back On Track, But There Are Still Problems To Be Had
What Did And Didn’t Work About Kaiju No. 8 Episode 14
Overall,Kaiju No. 8episode #14 was a much better episode than the season 2 premiere. While the premiere was mostly just setup for season 2’s story, episode #14 had a much stronger balance of fun character writing and stellar action, and that made it a far better representation ofwhat makesKaiju No. 8so good.
That being said, not only does it feel too soon to have another plot centered around Kaiju No. 9, but Kafka’s inability to transform feels contrived and comes off as a cheap way to force drama. There will probably be explanations for both, but as of now, it feels like an embodiment of the worst parts ofKaiju No. 8’s writing.
Kafka’s inability to transform feels contrived and comes off as a cheap way to force drama.
Kaiju No. 8episode #14 was a notably uneven episode, but even so, the things it did do well made it fun to watch from start to finish, even more so than the season premiere.Kaiju No. 8is still proving to be one of thebest anime of summer 2025, and hopefully, it will continue to live up to that hype.
