The co-creator ofXena: Warrior Princesshas given an update on the show’s potential reboot. A series so great that it has beencompared toThe Lord of the Ringsmovies,Xena: Warrior Princessfocused on the titular warrior and her partner, Gabrielle, battling foes. That timeless concept has allowedXena: Warrior Princessto still get rave reviews.
Introduced as a spin-off ofHercules: The Legendary Journeys,Xena: Warrior Princessoriginally aired from 1995 until 2001. Since fans continue to loveXena: Warrior Princessto this day, there is still a dedicated following who would love to see more adventures featuring the show’s characters.

Xena: Warrior Princess’co-creator, Robert Tapert, spoke toEntertainment Weeklyfor an oral history of the show. After discussing the popular fantasy show, Tapert told the outlet that work is being done on aXena: Warrior Princessreboot series. However, Tapert also expressed skepticism about his ability to come up with new stories for the reboot. Check out his comments below:
We are trying to launch a new version of Xena. It would not be the story of Xena and Gabrielle with Lucy and Renee [O’Connor]. It would be like they did with Star Trek, a reimagining of that universe. Whatever it’s gonna be, it will be different, which is exciting.

Thirty years later, it has to be different. [I’m] always a reluctant participant of reboots. Because I’ve done 134 episodes or whatever it is, I don’t feel like there’s a fresh series of stories that I haven’t told yet. That could be my lack of imagination, but I didn’t want to recast Lucy and Renee. [I’m now] interested in doing [a reboot 30 years later]. [I don’t know] know when and where it is, but they’re gonna see a script somewhere in the next three to six months, and one can only hope.
What This Means For Xena: Warrior Princess' Future
SinceXena: Warrior Princesshas so many passionate fans, discussions of the show getting a potential reboot are nothing new. However, past updates on the possibility of aXena: Warrior Princessreboot have been less promising.
In October 2021, Lucy Lawless toldScreen Rantabout how manyfailed attempts at aXena: Warrior Princessreboot there had been.

You know what? They have tried. They can’t find a way to write it better. That’s the truth. They have struggled and tried. Lots of people have tried, but they all get to the end and go, “This is not going to be – " [If] it can’t be as good or better than the original, why would you do it? That appears to be the sticking point. But, who knows? There’s going to come along a fresh talent who is going to strike the right way to do it.
Unlike those comments from Lawless, Tapert’s remarks toEWmake it seem like aXena: Warrior Princessreboot could happen. As exciting as that sounds, fans should still keep their expectations in check. After all, Tapert comments made it clear that the project is in the planning stages and that it would not be a strict continuation.
Our Take On The Potential Xena: Warrior Princess Reboot
On top of co-creatingXena: Warrior Princess, Tapert has produced many beloved movies. These include producing credits likeEvil Dead II,Army of Darkness,The Grudge,Don’t Breathe, andEvil Dead Rise. Given his accomplishment, Tapert’s interest in theXena: Warrior Princessreboot gives fans of the original show, like me, confidence.
Xena: Warrior Princesswas nominated for 7 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Music Composition for a Series in 2000.
There is another huge reason why I’m extremely excited about the prospect of aXena: Warrior Princessreboot. I’m ecstatic about the proposed involvement of Lawless and O’Connor. As someone who spent many Saturday mornings watching the adventures of Xena and Gabrielle, Lawless and O’Connor reuniting as their iconic characters would be a dream come true.
It also has to be noted that Lawless has repeatedly proven that she will forever be an onscreen badass. Between starring in theSpartacusTV franchise and the Tapert-produced showAsh vs Evil Dead, Lawless has continued to exhibit gravitas while she entertains fans. Getting to see more of her inXena: The Warrior Princesswould be fantastic.
