Star Wars villain actor Giancarlo Esposito responds to his apparent death inThe Mandalorian. Appearing across all three seasons of the show, Esposito played the menacing Moff Gideon. His character would go up against Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) multiple times in his pursuit of Grogu before seemingly dying in a fiery explosion inThe Mandalorianseason 3 finale.

While answering a question during a panel at FAN EXPO Boston, in whichScreenRantwas in attendance, Esposito responded to a question about whether he thinks Moff Gideon is really dead. He responds by saying that “if you don’t see it, it didn’t happen,” and notes how many times he has died on screen. Check out his quote below:

If you don’t see it… I’ve died a lot. I’ve died many times in television and film, and I say, if you don’t see it, it didn’t happen.

What This Means For Star Wars

Esposito’s career has seen him take on numerous villain roles, possibly the most famous being Gustavo Fring inBreaking BadandBetter Call Saul. He is able to bring an intensity to a character with his imposing voice and intimidating glare. As one of the most compelling antagonists inThe Mandalorian, his death sadly brought an end to his character.

The next major chapter for Din Djarin and Grogu will be inThe Mandalorian & Grogumovie. The next Star Wars movie could see his return, or potentially in other Disney+ shows that are set in the same time period. Given that several of the Disney+ shows are set 5 years after the events ofReturn of the Jedi, he does not have to be limited to one story.

Our Take On Esposito’s Comments

Given that his death inThe Mandaloriansaw him engulfed in flame, Moff Gideon is likely dead. However, as his armor had a beskar alloy in it, it may have protected him. Star Wars is also not above bringing back villains with little to no explanation, as exemplified in the deeply hilarious hand-waving that took place inRise of Skywalkerwith the line “Somehow, Palpatine returned.”

If Moff Gideon were to make future appearances,The Mandalorianhas already built in a method of bringing him back. Part of his overall plan was to create clones of himself that were force-sensitive. While this was supposedly stopped, it would be an easy way to bring back Moff Gideon inThe Mandalorian, and possibly, stronger than ever.
