There are some series that live long past what they should and those cancelled before their time. As part of its nostalgia boom, MTV is bringing back a cult favorite comedy show that fans felt never got a fair shake.

MTV has announced thatClone Highwill be making a return 18 years after its debut and quick cancellation. Original creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence will be executive producers on the project. Erica Rivinoja, a writer from the original series, will serve as showrunner for what is described as a “re-imagined” version of the animated comedy.

Clone Highwas, and still is, a baffling premise for a show. Clones of significant historical figures are thrown into a high school setting soaked in all the trials and tribulations found in most teenage circles. The announcement comes in as part of MTV’s recent string of revivals for popular ’90s animated favorites. Mike Judge’sBeavis and Buttheadis getting two new seasonsafter a nine-year hiatus. The other surprise revival from the studio isaDariaspin-off staring Jodie.

The announcement of aClone Highreboot comes as the entertainment industry, especially that of animated comedies, grapple with a changing landscape. Recently Mike Henry announced he wasstepping away from the character of Cleveland Brownafter 20 years of playing the character. One ofClone High’s main characters of color, Mahatma Gandhi, was voiced by white actor Michael McDonald.

There are also questions surrounding the character of Gandhi and whether or not he will be present in the reboot. Within the original, Gandhi’s depiction as a hyperactive jerk was a source of significant controversy. Due to backlash by Indian viewers, it was one of the main reasons for the show’s cancellation on MTV.

As the world continues to be an uncertain place, MTV’s new revival focused efforts are at least a comforting run of nostalgia. While very few details are known of theClone Highreboot, its still good news for those who place it as one of the shows taken too soon.
