Nathan Fillion is due to star as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner in three upcomingDCUprojects, includingLanterns, where he recently confirmed he dropped more F-bombs than in his entire career. This career was recently bolstered bySuperman, where he will appear asthe DCU’s Guy Gardnerfor the first time.

Much can be gleaned about hischaracter fromSupermantrailer footagealone. Shots of Gardner scowling, squaring up to Superman, and creating the construct of a hand flipping the bird with his Power Ring are three such examples that prove his characterization will be at least fairly comics-accurate.

Gardner is also set to appear inPeacemakerSeason 2 on August 21 before reprising his role inthe upcoming DCU show,Lanterns, which is yet to receive an official release date. With Hal Jordan and John Stewart slated to be theLanternsprotagonists, Fillion’s Gardner will presumably play a more minor role.

Nevertheless, Fillion offered insight into Gardner’s role in an interview withScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at the premiere ofSuperman. When asked about Guy Gardner’s numerous DCU appearances,Nathan Fillion divulged that he will be particularly foul-mouthed inLanterns, where “the stakes are a lot higher"compared to prior appearances. See the full comments below:

Ash Crossan: You’re going to be in Lanterns, but you’re also going to be in Peacemaker.

Nathan Fillion: Yes, to both of them.

Ash Crossan: Okay, so tell me about the greater picture of Guy Gardner and how he moves through the DCU — he seems to know everybody.

Nathan Fillion: I’ll tell you — it’s the same character, but in different circumstances. In his circumstances in Peacemaker, it’s very lighthearted and fun; and his circumstances in Lanterns, the stakes are a lot higher. It doesn’t change the character, but he’s certainly dealing with that situation that he’s in.

And I’ll say this — I dropped more F-bombs on my first day on Lanterns than I had in my entire career put together.

Ash Crossan: …On set or in the script?

What Nathan Fillion’s Comments Mean For Lanterns

A Tirade Of F-Bombs Suggests A Mature Rating

Nathan Fillion’s comments are particularly illuminating when it comes toLanterns' overall tone.Details aboutLanternsare still relatively sparse, including its expected age rating. However,Fillion’s disclosure suggests that it will be the next DCU show to be rated TV-MA, the TV equivalent of an R-rating in movies.

It also suggests that, while the spotlight will be mostly pointed at co-protagonists Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Guy Gardner will play his most significant role yet.

By comparison,Supermanis rated PG-13, meaning Guy Gardner and his co-stars will be more restrained in their language. Instead,Lanternswill likely followPeacemaker’s lead in being a DCU property geared towards a more mature audience. This would continue a precedent for DCU shows that arguably began withPeacemakerseason one and continued withCreature Commandosin December 2024.

It also suggests that, while the spotlight will be mostly pointed at co-protagonists Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Guy Gardner will play his most significant role yet. That is, unless Fillion is simply referencing one short but expletive-ridden scenefeaturing his Green Lantern.

Lanternswill star Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

Fillion’s comments also confirm that audiences can expect a comic-accurate rendition of the typically brash and abrasive Guy Gardner. While his appearances in DC Comics are typically constrained by age-appropriate writing, there will be no such guardrails in a TV-MA-rated show, which Peacemaker (particularly regarding his tirade against Batman) can attest to.

Our Take On Nathan Fillion’s DCU Comments

Peacemaker Gives Me Hope For Lanters

Nathan Fillion’s comments have renewed my excitement for the character’s adaptation into live-action. Whilehis appearance inSupermanshould offer a more family-friendly look at how an unconventionally impudent superhero interacts with the more archetypal Superman,Lanternsis seemingly poised to deliver a no-holds-barred approach.

GivenPeacemaker’s critical acclaim, I have every faith that this will be expertly handled.Lanternsis currently billed as a detective story, soI imagine it will strike a different tone fromPeacemaker’s black comedy while capitalizing on a more mature approachto the superhero genre. With all that in mind, I have high hopes for the series.
