Even though Netflix’s crime drama miniseriesUntamedtakes place in Yosemite National Park in California, the series was not actually filmed there. Untamed, a six-part limited series, was co-written byMark L. Smith ofThe RevenantandAmerican Primevalacclaim.
Eric Bana leads thecast ofUntamedas Kyle Turner, a Yosemite National Park Service agent who investigates the apparent murder of a mysterious young girl who fell of the edge of El Capitan. While several signature landmarks of Yosemite National Park are seen throughoutUntamed,the Netflix series was not filmed in California, or the United States, for that matter.

Parts Of Untamed Were Filmed In A Vancouver Sound Stage
Netflix’sUntamedwas filmed primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, not in Yosemite National Park, where the series is almost entirely set. The series employs aerial shots of Yosemite National Park, butthe actors and production crew did not capture any written scenes inside the actual park.
Filming forUntamedbegan in Vancouver in late June 2024 and wrapped in late September last year. Part of the production was captured atNorth Shore Studios in North Vancouver, where dozens of other projects, such asMan of Steel,Deadpool,Godzilla,Jumanji,Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,Fantastic Four, andRise of the Planet of the Apeshave also been shot.
It’s unclear exactly why Untamed was not filmed in Yosemite National Park whatsoever. Several films and TV shows, includingsome of the greatest movies of all time, have been filmed in Yosemite, includingIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,Monty Python and the Holy Grail, andStar Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Parts Of Shōgun Were Also Filmed In Port Moody
Untamedwas also partially filmed inChip Kerr Park, located in Port Moody, BC, Canada, where parts of FX’s Emmy-winning drama seriesShōgunwere filmed.
According toTri-Cities Dispatch, “A dozen semi-trailers, a boom lift, catering truck, and a large film crew with set designers, production assistants, camera operators, actors and directors took over a portion of Henry Street, Hope Street and William Street” in August 2024.
The natural landscape of Canada and other financial factors make it a suitable and convincing stand-in setting for Yosemite National Park in Untamed.
Mark L. Smith explained toNetflix’s Tudumthe inspiration behind setting Untamed in Yosemite, even though it wasn’t really filmed there.“Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery,but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that.”
The natural landscape of Canada and other financial factors make it a suitable and convincing stand-in setting for Yosemite National Park inUntamed. Though it’s not quite the real thing, shooting in a U.S. National Park would likely have been more complicated and expensive.
