The full trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation of Capcom’sMonster Hunterfranchise has been released and as expected, big monsters and the hunting thereof feature heavily.
Co-produced by Tencent Pictures, the production company owned by gaming giants Tencent, and Toho, the studio behindlegendary kaiju seriesGodzilla, there’s some serious pedigree behind this film. Along with Anderson’s experience in adapting games likeMortal Kombatand theResident Evilseries, this promises to be an adaptation that at least resembles the immensely popular action RPG series.

The trailer shows Captain Artemis, played by Milla Jovovich, and her elite military crew being sucked into a portal which transports them to a world populated by giant monsters, such as the giant Diablos. Helping them find their way back is The Hunter (Tony Jaa) and The Admiral (Ron Perlman) along with his Palico sidekick the Meowscular Chef. Not much else is given away but we see Artemis wielding a pair of dual blades and get a glimpse at two more creatures, Apceros and Nerscyllas, that’ll be appearing in the movie.
A huge fan of the series himself,Monster Hunterhas been a passion project for Paul W.S. Anderson andhe was keen to stay true to the look of the games,using original monster and weapon designs and consulting game director Kaname Fujioka and producer Ryozo Tsujimoto on how to depict the cast of giant monsters.
Monster Hunteris a rare case of a theater release being brought forward; originally delayed to April 2021, its release was bumped up to December this year. According to the trailer, Monster Hunter will be “only in theaters,” which seems an odd choice given the current circumstances.
Monster Hunterwill be tearing up a theater near you from Dec 30.
