The newest entry in the long-runningGod of Warfranchise is being planned for a 2026 release, according to an industry insider. SinceGod of War: Ragnarok’s release in 2022, fans have been eager to see where the future of the series heads, as the expansive and well-received freeValhallaroguelite DLC acted as an epiloguefor the Norse saga, which released at the end of 2023. While there’s nothing confirmed about the purported new game, if rumors are true, we may see the game sometime next year, and it looks like we may be heading back to Greece.

According to a statement made by reputable journalist and industry insider Jeff Grubb during a livestream on theJeff Grubb’s Game MessYouTube channel, the currently unannounced GreekGod of Warproject has been internally delayed until 2026.NfinityBLshared this note on Reddit in a post quoting Grubb’s comment:“…and the unnannounced Greek God of War project, which I heard was pushed into 2026 as well."

What We Know About The Next God Of War

If The Rumors Are True, It Will Be A Massive Change For The Franchise

While we don’t have a lot of information about the nextGoWgame, there are several rumors floating around, and if they are true, then the next entry is set to shake up the franchise even more than the stellar 2018 reboot did. Previously, it was reported thata new GreekGoWstorywas in development to be released in 2025, according to Grubbs. The title is rumored to be a brand-new entry and not a remaster of Kratos' previous trilogy of games from the PlayStation 2 era.

Other rumors suggestthe game will not star Kratos, but will introduce his brother named Deimos, and take place in Greece before Kratos becomes a god. It’s also rumored that the game will be a 2.5D Metroidvania-style game, potentially creating the second huge gameplay change for the long-running series. All of these rumors are, of course, just speculation, and nothing has been confirmed about the game or whether it even officially exists, but it seems likely, given Grubb’s reputation and the abundance of rumors surrounding the supposed game.

How Do Games Get Delayed Before They’re Even Announced?

Internal Delays Are Pretty Common

In addition to more infamous delays when a title is officially announced with a release date, and the final release ends up being delayed past that, internal delays during a game’s development are quite common. There could be several reasons for an internal delay, such as quality concerns, market shifts, and general direction changes. They sometimes occur when a developer and publisher are setting fiscal year revenue goals and wish to release the game at a specific time. All of that (or even part of it) can lead to a game’s public announcement being delayed.

With such alarge DLC expansionasValhallawas, fans are definitely eager for moreGod of War. When the game will officially be announced remains to be seen, but if the rumor is true and the title has been internally delayed until 2026, an announcement at The Game Awards in December seems pretty likely. TheValhallaannouncement and release were announced there in 2023, so it seems like the perfect place to bringGod of Warback to people’s minds before 2026, especially if we do indeed head back to Greece.
