The film, also starring British actor Damson Idris, is about a drone pilot named Harp (Idris) who is sent to work with Leo (Mackie) in a dangerous war zone after disobeying orders. He soon finds out that Leo is not a regular soldier, he’s a top-secret android fighter. Together, they must find a doomsday device and stop a nuclear attack to save the fate of the world.
The concept of a supersoldier tasked with saving the world is of course not a new one for Mackie. He’s most well known for his role as Captain America’s (Chris Evans) right-hand man Falconin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he will be stepping into the role again in theupcoming Disney Plus seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The new series is set to take place after Falcon has been passed the baton from Captain America inAvengers: Endgameand will show Falcon teaming up with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) to fight anarchist group the Flag-Smashers. Idris will also likely look familiar to Netflix viewers, with his role in their British science fiction seriesBlack Mirrorin 2019.
Fans seem excited to see Mackie in a superhero-type role again, and he’s often listed as one of Hollywood’s top action stars. Outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s also starred in theNetflix science fiction action seriesAltered Carbonwhich was canceled in 2020 after two seasons.
Before Marvel, he made his name in action films like the Academy Award-winning war filmThe Hurt Lockerand 2013’sPain & Gain. The latter was directed byMichael Bay, a well known powerhouse of action films.
