Yesterday, Niantic andPokemon GOrevealed the exclusive move for Mareep’s upcoming Community Day. For those trainers who manage to evolve Flaaffy into an Ampharos, the Electric-type Pokemon will learnDragon Pulse. While this move seems to add some versatility to the Pokémon’s move set, many players are upset about how underwhelming the Community Day appears to be compared to previous events.
Typically, the fully-evolved version of the Pokemon caught during the Community Day event somehow influences the metagame. For example, a Dragonite with Draco Meteor is a powerful counter to other Dragon-types inPokemon GO, and a Venusaur with Frenzy Plant makes it one of the best Grass-types in the game. However, Mareep has an underwhelming set of moves and stats, with Dragon Pulse doing little to improve this.
Overshadowed by legendaries Raikou and Zapdos, Ampharos is pretty overlooked because it is neither a great attacker or defender. Many players even questioned the logic behind giving the Electric-type Pokemon a Dragon-type move. It appears that even Joe Merrick of Serebii.net weighed in on the decision to give Ampharos this move:
Despite Merrick’s defense of Ampharos and the Dragon Pulse move, many are still vocal in their disappointment for the popular Community Day. Many wanted Squirtle, Charmander, or even aMagikarp(so it would be easier to catch Mew) Community Day instead. Considering it’s also the first non-Kanto Pokémon to receive a Community day, some feel it’s a bit lackluster and mediocre; however, it is also worth noting that Community Day events are likely to be around for a while, so players can’t really expect a game-changer every month.
Although some players are disappointed that their expectations were not met for the upcoming Community Day, there is still plenty in the game worth pursuing. Some players may be working on Special Research to catch Mew or Field Researchto catch Moltres. Not to mention, it’s almost a guarantee that another Community Day will occur next month, so players unsatisfied this month only need to wait and see what comes next.
