Upcoming first-person shooterRedfallis the latest game from Arkane Studios, the developer behindDeathloop, one of the most unique FPS games on the market. While the blood-sucking fiends have been used fairly regularly in video games over the years,Redfallpromises a different take on vampires, with several new variants introduced in a recent gameplay showcase. These include tough ‘Underboss’-type vampires, who emerge to challenge the player once parts of the map have been fully purged of local vampire groups. Each of these Underboss enemies will have unique abilities, and the variety on offer seems extremely promising.

With plenty of Arkane’s trademark unconventional gameplay, and a huge open world full of secrets to discover,Redfallseems like one of Xbox’s most promising unreleased games, even at a time when PS5 has been stealing the limelight with exclusive titles such asGod of War RagnarokandStray. Players are tasked with exploring the town of Redfall, Massachusetts, either alone or with up to three friends in co-op, and cleansing it of all signs of the undead. Using a variety of abilities and weaponry, players will face down hordes of demonic creatures in stunning locales throughout the town.

Redfall’s Gameplay Variety is Looking Promising

In everything from the characters to the weapons and abilities, variety seems to be one ofRedfall’s main priorities. Each of the four playable protagonists is completely different with their own strengths and weaknesses. This should encourage players to try each of them out and see which one best suits their play style, before possibly linking up with friends to form a fully-fledged vampire-hunting party. That being said, one of the fewdownsides toRedfall’s co-op playis that only the host player will be able to keep any game progression made during the session. While the other three players will keep any experience and loot earned, they will not take story progression with them back to their own games.

Blending traditional FPS mechanics with a range of interesting abilities and skills is something that fans ofArkane’s previous gameshave come to expect at this point, andRedfalllooks like it will take this to the next level. There will be plenty of options for players who prefer stealth to an all-out attack, and gadgets such as a teleportation device and a robot used to cause distraction should provide cool alternatives to the standard array of guns and melee weapons.

The town of Redfall will be fully explorable, and random encounters can happen in the most unexpected places, paving the way for some unique side missions. It promises to be crawling with vampire nests, and other supernatural locations that the player will need to cleanse. There are several safehouses dotted around the map that will provide the player with a welcome respite from battling the town’s undead inhabitants. While the premise, and inclusion of four-player co-op, have seen gamerslikenRedfalltoLeft 4 Dead, developers say it’s more likeFar Cry, and having a huge open world to explore with factions to take over certainly lends credence to this comparison.

Arkane’s stellar track record when it comes to FPS games means that expectations forRedfallare high. The developer has promised that this is its biggest, most ambitious project yet, and everything that has been revealed so far seems to back this up. 2023 could be a much more exciting year than the previous one for Xbox fans, and along with anotherhuge upcoming game,Starfield,Redfallcould have a big part to play in ensuring that this happens.
