Warning: Spoilers ahead forResident Alienseason 4, episode 3, “Ties That Bind.“Resident Alienseason 4, episode 3, “Ties That Bind,” is an example of the show’s rare foray into time travel, and the installment transforms a season 2 storyline. AlthoughResident Alienseason 2 included a prominent temporal adventure, traversing the timeline isn’t something that the show tends to make a habit of. However, whenAlan Tudyk’s Harry Vanderspeigleand Alice Wetterlund’s D’arcy Bloom go back to 1970 in “Ties that Bind,“Resident Alien’s time travel lore is expanded in an interesting way.
Although Tudyk has led theResident Aliencastas Harry since the show began, he isn’t actually the only actor to have played the character.Resident Alienseason 2 featured a character called Goliath, who was played in his human form by David Biachi. The biggest twist in the show’s sophomore run was thatGoliath turned out to be a version of Harry from an alternate future. Putting such a spin on one ofResident Alien’s best charactersmade Harry even more interesting, and “Ties That Bind” quietly acknowledges Goliath again.

Resident Alien Season 4 Just Confirmed Goliath’s Timeline Still Exists
David Biachi’s version of Resident Alien’s main character didn’t quite fix things as much as he thought
Goliath’sResident Alienseason 2 storyline strongly suggests that there is only really one timeline, but that it can be corrected and changed. When the Earth is made uninhabitable for humans in an alternate future, Harry ends up walking alone for centuries across the surface of the devastated planet, eventually adopting the name Goliath. WhenGoliath eventually comes across a rogue time portal, he uses it to travel back to the past to prevent humanity’s end, taking the form of a nearby human, who is played by David Bianchi.
Goliath’s goal makes it seem that his corrections to the timeline mean the future he witnessed will never happen, but “Ties That Bind” just revealed that isn’t the case.
Goliath’s goal makes it seem that his corrections to the timeline mean the future he witnessed will never happen, but “Ties That Bind” just revealed that isn’t the case.Resident Alien’s trip back to 1970 comes with the revelation thatthe present day won’t be altered by Harry and D’arcy’s intervention. Instead, a new reality will branch off, creating a parallel universe. Therefore, Goliath’s plan wasn’t quite as effective as he probably intended. He didn’t scrub his timeline from existence, but instead started a new one alongside the one where Earth was doomed.
This update toResident Alien’s travel lore could be described as a retcon, but the continued existence of Bridget complicates things. Bridget, while technically Harry’s child, is actually Goliath’s offspring. Therefore, Harry never getting to become Goliath, thanks to his future self creating a new and safer timeline, means Bridget’s existence may be a paradox. Then again, Bridget could also be evidence thatResident Alienhas always intended for its time travel to function this way. If Goliath’s timeline had been completely wiped from existence, then Bridget couldn’t exist.
Maybe Goliath didn’t do quite enough to prevent the Earth from being destroyed, and that Harry will still become Goliath.
As it stands, Harry’s child is simply a high-concept multiverse-hopper. Alternatively, maybe Goliath didn’t do quite enough to prevent the Earth from being destroyed, and that Harry will still become Goliath, travel back to the 21st century, and father Bridget with Violinda Darvell (Maxim Roy). I think this is the least likely of all my theories, but it can’t fully be removed from the table.
The Show’s Time Travel Lore Reveal Accidentally Makes General McCallister A Villain Again
Linda Hamilton’s Resident Alien may have just created a dark new timeline
Harry and D’arcy aren’t the only time-travelling characters in “Ties That Bind.“Linda Hamilton’s General Eleanor McCallister also shows up in 1970and interacts with her younger self. While her goal is to make her father believe that the alien ship he saw was real, and not to be persuaded otherwise, pulling it off isn’t quite as wholesome as it initially seems. McCallister has been a huge part in stoppingResident Alien’s Grey Aliensfrom destroying Earth, but she only joined the military because of the emotional turmoil extraterrestrials caused her father in her original timeline.
General McCallister beganResident Alienas an adversary to Harry, but gradually became a vital ally.
Young Eleanor is convinced by her older self to vindicate what her father saw, and as such, he likely goes on to avoid the tortured existence he had in the show’s main reality. So,there’s now far less reason for that version of McCallister to enlist in the military, which means there’s a greater chance that the Greys succeed in taking the Earth for themselves in the alternate universe that her intervention creates. So, this sort of makes her a reverse Goliath inResident Alienlore.
