Resident Evil 2earned rave reviews when it launched earlier this year, with particular praise aimed at the monstrous Mr. X. The Mr. X tyrant relentlessly pursues players throughout Raccoon City, destroying everyone and everything unlucky enough to get in his way. The modding community has taken to replacing Mr. X in theResident Evil 2remake with a variety of pop culture characters, including a new mod that replaces Mr. X with Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King’sIt.
The Pennywise mod forResident Evil 2sees the evil cosmic clown act in the same way as Mr. X - stalking players throughout the streets of Raccoon City. In a video of the mod posted on Twitter by clxireredfield, we can see that Pennywise is functionally the same as Mr. X, but creepy circus music plays whenever it is near.

ThisResident Evil 2mod is just the latest way that Pennywise has found itself in a video game.Fortniteadded Pennywise’s balloons recently, and other references toIthave been found in games likeFar Cry 5and theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarebeta. Considering how successfulIt Chapter Twohas been at the global box office, with a global haul of over $300 million at the time of this writing, one has to imagine that references to Pennywise will continue popping up in games for some time to come.
Meanwhile, it seems like there is no end in sight for theResident Evil 2remake modding community. Besides this Pennywise mod, modders have created a variety of other mods for the popular survival-horror game. Some notable ones include a mod where Mr. X is swapped with Jason Voorhees, and another whereMr. X is swapped with Thomas the Tank Engine.
While it seems most of theResident Evil 2remake mods replace Mr. X, some of them replace Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield instead. For example, a mod was released that let playersplay as Shaggy fromScooby-Doo, and another mod swapped Claire Redfield for Captain Marvel. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what else theResident Evil 2remake modding community dreams up in the future.
