In a wild expansion of its lore,Rick and Mortyjust introduced a new type of portal, changing the rules of the multiverse.Rick and Mortyis known for its expansion universe, full of wild alien planets and bizarre alternate realities. However, the franchise just introduceda new type of reality - the antiverse.

The entrances to the antiverses are marked by red portals, as opposed to the green portals that fans are used to.

InRick and Mortylore, the multiverse is essentially infinite, with alternate worlds where essentially anything is possible. Despite this, the main characters spend most of their time inthe Central Finite Curve- a cordoned-off part of the multiverse encompassing all the realities where Rick Sanchez is the smartest man alive. Rick’s ability to travel between dimensions at will is all but unique, and makes his Portal Gun one of the most coveted pieces of tech in the multiverse.

However, the franchise’s new Antiverse concept comes not from Rick but from Morty, who yet again is responsible for a disastrous twist, creatinga set of apocalyptic parallel Earths which threaten to damage reality itself.

Morty’s Potential Futures Merge into a Threat to Reality

The change comes inRick and Morty - Finals Week: Old Man Morty, from Alex Firer, Fred Stresing, Meg Casey and Crank! In the canon tie-in comic, Morty encounters his older self, who has traveled back in time due to nostalgia for his childhood. This older Morty is just as amoral as Rick but with a far less ambitious perspective on the multiverse. When Morty tries to thwart the plans of his older self, the two end up careening through time, fusing several of Morty’s potential futures together.

The result is that the future versions of Morty are transformed into living portals to impossible realities, which Rick describes as antiverses. These worlds don’t follow the usual logic or narrative of other dimensions, and could even infect reality with their paradoxical logic. Each new antiverse is populated by"Rick, Mortys, others who must never be!“WhileRick does a mediocre jobtrying to stash the antiverses away, the comic ends witha demonic Morty stumbling out into Dimension C-131.

Interestingly, the entrances to the antiverses are marked by red portals, as opposed to the green and gold portals that fans are used to (representing travel within the Central Finite Curve and larger multiverse respectively.) This makes sense, since Rick explains that these antiverses aren’t like normal parallel Earths, and are instead"worlds whose entire timelines were rotted by uncertainty,“resulting in apocalyptic outcomes.

It’s clear thatRick and Mortycomicshave big plans for these antiverses and the twisted Ricks and Mortys they’ve created, as well as paying off fans' desire for a new type of portal travel. Since the latestRick and Mortycomics are also show-canon, it’s possible that the antiverses and their characters could appear in the show from season 8 on.
