Rick & Morty Season 8, Episode 7’s Post-Credits Scene Is The Show’s Second Jab At Space Jam
Last Season, Rick & Morty Roasted Space Jam 2
In the post-credits scene of “Ricker Than Fiction,” Jerry uses the Movie-lizer to put himself inSpace Jam 7with LeBron James. It’s another sharp jab at Hollywood’s incessant need to squeeze every franchise for every last penny it’s worth, but the choice of franchise in this gag is very deliberate.
It’s another sharp jab at Hollywood’s incessant need to squeeze every franchise for every last penny it’s worth, but the choice of franchise in this gag is very deliberate.
Rick and Morty themselves appeared inSpace Jam: A New Legacy, because Warner Bros. crammed every I.P. it owns into that movie. The show previously poked fun at Rick and Morty’sSpace Jamcameos in season 7, episode 6, “Rickfending Your Mort,”in which Rick killed the versions of Rick and Morty that were inSpace Jam 2.
Morty is horrified to see that Rick has killed two variants of themselves, but Rick assures Morty that they were begging for death. It was a sly nod to the shame around a corporation selling out theRick and Mortybrand for some pointless synergy, and so is thisSpace Jam 7gag.
Summer’s “Raptor Porn” Is A Timely Blockbuster Reference
After Jerry goes into the Movie-lizer to star inSpace Jam 7, Summer comes in and rests her “raptor porn” screenplay on the machine. It gets incorporated intoSpace Jam 7, andwe hear Jerry get attacked by a pack of horny velociraptors while Speedy Gonzales watches. As random as it seems, this is actually a pretty timely gag.
Rick and Mortyairs new episodes on Adult Swim every Sunday.
The episode is all about creatively bankrupt studios exploiting their franchises for profit, andUniversal just had a big hit withJurassic World Rebirth. TheJurassicseries isn’t quite “raptor porn,” like Summer’s script inRick and Morty, but it does use the thrill of dinosaurs to attract audiences.
