Rumors of aFinal Fantasy 9remake have been going around for years now, but next week gives Square Enix the perfect opportunity to confirm them. Rumblings of anFF9remake began in earnest in 2021, when it featured on a leakedlist of games due for NVIDIA’s GeForce Nowservice. But really, the desire for such a remake began a year prior, whenFinal Fantasy 7 Remakehit the shelves, and fans everywhere began wondering which other classic games Square might want to remake next.

Still, despite almost half a decade of speculation, and almostevery other game from the NVIDIA leak being provento exist, absolutely nothing concrete has come out about anFF9remake - at least not yet. It’s one of the most beloved games in the series, and although it hasn’t quite reached the iconic status ofFF7,FF9has its vocal and devoted fan base. That said, Square Enix is really setting up the perfect opportunity to confirm the long-standing remake rumors as soon as next week - all that remains is to see whether they’ll take it.

July 7 Is The 25th Anniversary of FF9

Square’s Social Media Commemorates The Date

Square recently posted a calendar for the month of July 2025 on its social media channels (here viataiyo85) on Reddit. The backdrop featuresFF9-inspired art, depicting the entire playable cast on stage of thePrima Vista, amid a hail of confetti, a cheering crowd, and a photobombing Moogle. You may note that July 7 is marked with a little Moogle icon, too, and there’s a reason for that:July 7 is the 25th anniversary of the original release ofFinal Fantasy 9, which came out on that day in Japan way back in 2000.

And the intentions of this image could be totally innocent: it’s obviously supposed to be used as a convenient phone background, so you can enjoy some art ofFF9’s memorable cast of characterswhile seeing your month at a glance. That said,it’s really pushing the 25th anniversary ofFF9, which would kind of be the perfect day to announce anFF9remake.

Square Enix is literally marking our calendars for July 7.

The anniversary will putFF9at the forefront of many players' minds, which would help bring more attention to such a major announcement. Andit’s long-since been tradition for developers to reveal re-releases or sequels on a game’s anniversary, so this wouldn’t be out of character. Square Enix is literally marking our calendars for July 7, but whether it’s just a bit of fun or a hint at an upcoming announcement remains to be seen.

An FF9 Remake Seems Likely - But We Don’t Know When

FF9 Is All But Announced

Ultimately, all the evidence points to anFF9remake being real. Betweenthe recently revealed merch, the NVIDIA leaks, the plethora ofother remakes coming out of Square, and now, the impending 25th anniversary, it all adds up. Even before the 25th anniversary,Square’s teasing posts on social mediahave bolstered fan expectations of anFF9remake.

But through it all, Square Enix has remained quiet on the possibility of anFF9remake, refusing to confirm or deny whether it really exists. If it does, we may find out more about a potentialFinal Fantasy 9remake in just a few days - but there’s just as good a chance that we may not.
