Squid Gamecreator Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals a potential spinoff idea he has ahead of season 3’s release. WithSquid Gameseason 3being the final season, there has been speculation about how the world of the hit series can continue in the future.

Hwang has been adamant about season 3 being the end of the story that began with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), but has discussed potential spinoff ideas before. A separate spinoff helmed by David Fincher is also in development at Netflix.

While speaking withEntertainment Weekly,Hwang reveals that he has considered aSquid Gamespinoff set between seasons 1 and 2. The spinoff would further explore Gi-hun’s search for the recruiters, along with showing what Captain Park (Oh Dal-su) and the masked men are doing when the games are not underway.

Hwang does clarify that season 3 is meant to feel like a finale, but he admits that he does not want to close the door on any potential spinoffs or sequels. Check out his comments below:

I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) looks around for the recruiters. There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park (Oh Dal-su) or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future.

Season 3 is indeed a finale, and you’ll be able to feel that once you watch. But I’m not trying to say that I’m going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.

What This Means For Squid Game

This Spinoff Is Hypothetical For Now

This is not the first time that Hwang has discussed aSquid Gamespinoffset between seasons 1 and 2, which would follow the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo) during this time.

While Hwang seems interested in exploring this time period, he is also satisfied by season 3’s conclusive ending. The series finale will not directly set up a spinoff, but there is still a possibility of Hwang eventually returning to make this idea a reality.

Along with being satisfied by season 3, Hwang has also spoken about how helost"eight or nine teeth"duringSquid Gameseason 1due to high levels of stress.

This is only one of the many ways that making the series has been a stressful and arduous process that has taken years to come to fruition. Right now, making moreSquid Gamestories is not a priority for Hwang, and he is happy to see the world finally getting to experience the complete story.

Our Take On Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Comments

The Spinoff Is Intriguing, But Not Necessary

The spinoff idea Hwang suggests is intriguing, especially if the theory ofCaptain Park being a former winnercomes true in season 3. At the same time, the first episodes of season 2 do a good job of showing what has happened to Gi-hun since season 1 ended.

Early season 2 episodes also provide more insight into the life of the Recruiter and even show how the masked guards are recruited. I don’t think there needs to be an entire spinoff series dedicated to this time period andwould rather letSquid Gameend on a strong note with season 3.
