What Anakin And Obi-Wan’s Mustafar Duel Means In Star Wars

This Battle Brought A Brotherhood And An Era To An End

Although Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader’s Mustafar battle hit the screen 20 years ago, its significance continues to be felt even now. Devastatingly,it was this battle that brought a true end to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s brotherhood, and it left Anakin restricted to the famous Darth Vader suit, doomed to a life of pain and suffering because of what he’d brought upon himself. The reverberations of this event can be felt throughoutStar Warsmovies and TV shows, most obviously in the originalStar Warstrilogy, but even more recent additions toStar Warshave revealed how meaningful this was.

For example,Obi-Wan Kenobirevealed how stricken with grief and guilt Obi-Wan remained even 10 years later, and how Darth Vader was obsessive about tracking down and seeking revenge on Obi-Wan. Of course, the ramifications extended beyond just the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan, especially given Obi-Wan’s failure to kill Anakin—even if he had believed Anakin was dead—meant that Vader was ruthlessly terrorizing the galaxy by Palpatine’s side. Given the extent of this duel’s meaning, in addition to it being beautifully choreographed, it’s not all that surprising that it remains a fan favorite.
