The Last of Usmay be hailed as a landmark single-player experience, but the game also had a quality multiplayer experience as well. Many assumed thatThe Last of Us: Part 2would feature a similar multiplayer component as the original game, but as it turns out, it may not have any kind of multiplayer at all.
Reddit user toochuy noticed on the Days of Play PS4 box thatThe Last of Us: Part 2is listed alongside games likeDays Gone,God of War, andMarvel’s Spider-Manas titles that do not support online multiplayer. While it’s possible this is just an error, it could also be a genuine sign thatThe Last of Us: Part 2won’t have multiplayer at all.
However, this would contradict what we know aboutThe Last of Us: Part 2from official sources. Naughty Dog’s own Anthony Newman, co-director forThe Last of Us: Part 2,confirmed at E3 2018 that there would be multiplayerof some kind in the game, to be revealed at a later date. That later date still hasn’t come, but Naughty Dog also hasn’t officially said that the planned multiplayer mode was scrapped.
There have also been multiple job listings posted by Naughty Dog that point toThe Last of Us: Part 2sporting some kind of multiplayer mode. Just six months ago, Naughty Dog was hiring for a Multiplayer Server Programmer, and the job listing pointed toThe Last of Us: Part 2multiplayer having character customization, an in-game store, and dedicated servers.
Since Naughty Dog was hiring for this position was recently as six months ago, it seems unlikely that the studio has decided to scrapThe Last of Us: Part 2’s multiplayer mode. However, we haven’t had an update on the game in quite some time, and so it’s hard to say definitively one way or another without more information from Naughty Dog.
WithThe Last of Us: Part 2rumored for a February 2020 release date, here’s hoping fans don’t have to wait too much longer to find out more about the long-awaited game.
