Nintendo ended itsE3 2019 Nintendo Directwith a bombshell announcement. It announced thatThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2is in active development for the Nintendo Switch.
The trailer forThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2shows Link and Zelda exploring a mysterious cavern filled with dangers. It ends with a zombified creature turning its attention to them, leaving fans of the franchise with a lot more questions than answers. And with no release window for the game in sight, it’s unlikely that more details will come anytime soon.

While it’s not entirely clear who the monster is at the end of trailer forThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, speculation points to it being Ganondorf. Fans have pointed out how the music that plays when this creature is encountered appears to be Ganondorf’s theme from otherZeldagames, so that would make some sense. Again, that’s just speculation at this time, as Nintendo has not shared any official information on this creature’s identity.
Besides Link and Zelda encountering the monster, there are a couple of other big takeaways from this trailer forThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. One is that it appears to be set in the sameopen world Hyrulethat the first game was in, which could potentially mean a much shorter development time than the first game. Secondly, it appears to be going for a much darker tone, with some having compared it to the transition fromOcarina of TimetoMajora’s Maskback in the Nintendo 64 days.
With so many unanswered questions aboutThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildsequel, fans will no doubt be excited to learn more about the game. It’s unclear how far it is into development, and since Nintendo didn’t even provide a release window, we can’t say when those answers will come. However, fans should definitely be sure to tune in to any Nintendo Direct presentations moving forward just in case.
