Moe is as lonely as ever inThe Simpsonsseason 36, but keen-eyed viewers will know that this is a surprisingly sad twist in the long-running series. As such, it is not a big shock that the show utilizes a floating timeline wherein the backstories of its characters can change without warning. One episode states that Homer was born in the 1950s, while a later one claims he was born in the 1980s. Season 36’s finale depicts Marge’s death, but season 37 is unlikely to even mention it.

Althoughsome of the best episodes ofThe Simpsonscan be surprisingly moving, these unexpected canon adjustments tend to be accidental and, as a result, more disappointing than intentionally devastating.
For example, consider Moe’s fate in season 36. Throughout most of the show’s preceding seasons, Moe was always unlucky in love and a misanthropic, lonely figure to boot. However, in season 33, episode 4, “The Wayz We Were,” he was reunited with his earlier love interest Maya and, when the pair resolved their differences, he proposed to her.
