APokémonfan on Reddit has shared what an evolution line for one of the original starter Pokémon might look like if the evolutions were similar toDigimon, and the re-imagined stages and complexity are sparking a lot of mixed reactions and discussions about evolutions in both franchises. Pokémon seems to be focused onbringing back Mega Evolutions for 2025, so it isn’t too much of a surprise that a conversation about evolutions is arising.
In a Reddit thread byCranberry-Holiday, the user captured a screenshot and captioned the image with"The Bulbasaur line but as a Digimon evolution tree.“The image is complex, illustrating the odd evolution branches and creature designs that are present throughoutDigimon, using Bulbasaur and sort-of-related Pokémon as an example.The_only_Ase69summed up the image as confusing, writing,“As someone who knows absolutely nothing about Digimon, looking at this broke my brain.”

Pokémon Fan Reimagines Bulbasaur Evolutionary Line To Be Like Digimon’s
A Web Of Confusion
The image showcases Bulbasaur, one of theoriginal starter Pokémon, and its natural evolution to Ivysaur and Venusaur. It complicates things, however, by adding inseveral different Pokémon that are only vaguely relatedand some that are of completely different types and appearances. There are a total of 26 Pokémon in the image, all of which are used to demonstrate how absurd theDigimonevolutions are on a surface level.
Some of the Pokémon are from different generations, some are flying, andsome don’t resemble Bulbasaur at all. Most of the time, Pokémon have a clear visual connection between all the creatures' evolutions. That isn’t the case withDigimonbecause the creatures are digital, and virtually anything can be made into an evolution.

Fans' Reactions Are Mixed After Seeing What Pokémon Are Included
But Not For A Very Specific Reason
A lot of fans laugh and poke fun atDigimon’s convoluted evolutions, but the series also has plenty of fans, and this discussion on Reddit isbringing two communities together for a passionate debate. SomeDigimonfans admit how complex the evolutions are, withDarthAuron87giving a detailed explanation about why the creatures have so many evolutions and a lot of them unrelated to their previous versions, writing, “Even Digimon fans get lost. Digimon have alot[sic]more evolutions because they are digital monsters.”
There’s something to be said for the complexity that all of Bulbasaur’s evolutionary connections demonstrate, andcyanraichuwrites,“I’m really liking this new trend. These are fun to look at and make me want to try getting into Digimon.“Other fans are wishing for more “Pokémon Digimon Lines” to be made for fan discussions, while some are not in love with the idea, likeRedKnightXIV, who said, “Thanks. I hate it.”
The image is drawing a lot of discussion fromPokémonandDigimonfans, so hopefully, both fan bases can appreciate at least the idea of evolutions in both series. As both series evolve with new generations of creatures, their evolutionary designs likely will as well.
